He was supposed to be a dynamic pass-rusher because of his extreme athleticism. He was basically a very quiet Warren Sapp.

You like to start speaking your thoughts as if they are absolute reality. I'd like to know what exactly led you to conclude he was supposed to be "a dynamic pass rusher".

Here are some scouting reports on Harrell coming out of college. As you'll see, none of them claim Harrell as a dynamic pass rusher, instead all of them claim him to be a run stuffer.

Harrell also benched a solid 31 reps at 225 pounds at his Pro Day on March 22. The 6-5, 305-pound defensive tackle is a beast against the run, but he does need to improve on rushing the quarterback.

FFToolbox

He has the look of an excellent run stuffer and will make plays penetrating into the offensive backfield on a regular basis.

War Room Report

Positives: Plus run defender, can plug gaps and hold his ground. Has enough lower body strength to hold his own against run blocks. Wraps up well and rarely lets the ball carrier out of his grasp. Good leverage on run plays.

Negatives: Harrell has trouble getting off of a block when rushing the passer.

Funny, I have yet to see a report, post drafting Harrell, that said he was drafted to become a pass-rusher.

In fact, Pat Kirwan of NFL.com called this pick in his last mock before the 2007 draft.

He said: "The Pack need a running back. It is hard to pass on one here, but Harrell's latest workouts have put to rest the injury questions that surrounded the 314-pound DT who will keep the Green Bay defense moving forward against division opponent Chicago, which loves to run the ball."

Clearly Kirwan thought Harrell was a player whose strengths were playing against the run.

I could go on and try and find some quotes from Ted, which I'm sure would also show they view Harrell as a run stuffer (who could, perhaps, develop enough to give them something int he pass-rush department).

Once again BL, I'd love to see a link that claims Harrell was drafted to be a pass rusher.

Thanks for the sources and clarification AADP! Nice work. That's why I never count on my memory when it comes to college stuff. Mainly all I know is what ESPN will let me know. lol

I don't need links to prove anything. As I said, I actually watched the Vols and their defense. It's in the film.

Last time I checked, pressuring the quarterback to make a mistake means you're a pass rusher. It's not just sacks.

"As a pass rusher, he has a nice combination of power and agility to push and collapse the pocket."

I'm assuming that NFL scouts watched film on him too, and they say the complete opposite of what you say. Let's look at what they had to say:

Marc Ross, Buffalo: "He's a two-gap nose tackle. Big, strong. Not going to give you a lot of pass rush. Not going to give you a lot of range. If you want somebody to sit in there and plug it up in the middle, he's the guy."

Rich Snead, Tennessee: "Solid. Run stopper. I don't know he'll ever be a pass rusher."

Bill Polian, Indianapolis: "The (Tony) Dungy defense teams of the world want nothing to do with him. But the (Bill) Belichicks of the world are going to love Justin Harrell."

Link to quotes

Since that link is of an insider article, below is a screen cap of the page.

Look at the last quote. Polian, whose coach ran the Tampa-2 says Harrell doesn't fit the scheme. "A quiet Warren Sapp type"... really? Because Warren Sapp was a great fit for the Tampa-2, a penetrating DT capable of getting a pass rush. Bill Polian, the GM of a team that runs the Tampa-2 says flat out Harrell isn't going to fit the mold of a Tampa-2 DT.

At the end of the day Harrell has been a bust this far, but it's wrong to suggest he was supposed to develop into some great pass-rusher. That's not the case, he was touted and drafted based on being a run stuffer.

BL, you may have seen things in the Vols footage to make you think Harrell could be a pass rusher, I won't dispute that. However, Harrell was touted as a run stuffer coming out of college.

BTW BL, your link in the post doesn't work.

beast (5h) : Seems like he was just pissed because he was no longer the starter
beast (5h) : Campbell is right, he's rich and he doesn't have to explain sh!t... but that attitude gives teams reasons to never sign him again.
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I have some doubt about all that
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I read De'Vondre Campbell's tweet this morning (via the New York Post) Florio says that if he invested his earnings wisely, he will be good
beast (20-Feb) : I haven't followed, but I believe he's good when healthy, just hasn't been able to stay healthy.
dfosterf (20-Feb) : Hasn"t Bosa missed more games than he has played in the last 3 years?
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : He hasn't been too bad when healthy but I don't feel like I ever heard much about when he is
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Felt like he was more interested in his body, than football. He flashed more than I expected
