Like that famous line in the movie "Airplane"

"Looks like I picked the bad week to quit smoking."

Did the Packers pick the bad off season to overhaul the coaching staff.

Now the Titans are looking for a new D.C. after Schwartz was just hired to be the H.C. of the Lions.

Jesus, that is one more opportunity out there in the NFL's micro economic love story of supply and demand.

I can not remember an off season with so many coaching opportunities and this does not bode well for the Packers at this critical time.

How much do you think this has effected the quality of coaches the Pack could have brought in?

I think the Packers will be fine because Green Bay would appear to be an attractive landing spot (and not for the weather). I'm a bit surprised with the Nolan to Denver and Williams to New Orleans. Not because the teams aren't good -- on the contrary, both could easily be in the playoffs. But the same can be said for Green Bay -- and we're only a season removed from 14-4. I think a chance to put a new scheme to test with a solid, [mostly] young talent pool and a potential defensive playmaker at the 9th pick makes for a great job.

While I'm surprised so far at how things are going, I'm still confident we'll get someone good. At this point I'm gunnin' for 1) An ex-head coach like a Dom Capers who, unlike Williams, is probably seen best as a coordinator or 2) a younger coach who knows his stuff and has pedigreed background.

Maybe in the case of Capers I'm not giving him enough credit. He WAS a successful head coach. But the point I'm trying to make is that coaches like him seem less likely to return to the head coaching ranks than Williams/Nolan. It doesn't have anything to do with professional acumen, though. It's just some people are better coordinators than head coach. If we brought in a Gregg Williams maybe we'd have to deal with him leaving in a few years.

Ah hell ... let's just clone Jim Johnson or Dick LeBeau.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

just a thought I had about McDermott... Many of you know I am a bit nervous and unsure whether or not he can even get out of his contract with Philly. he has another year on his contract and they could block his leaving. a coach can be blocked if he is trying to make a "lateral move". you all know this. and it's been said that a DC position could be seen as a lateral move... my question is, does the contract have anything to do with whether the league views it as a lateral move? i mean, if he's making $110,000/yr in Philly but we want to hire him for $750,000/yr, how can that be a lateral move? on the other hand, if philly blocks an interview, it would never get to the stage where they talk contracts anyway. so, anyone know?

I think we have entirely too many threads about this topic already; I will be examining them for possible merger.

the only thing i can say is... you gotta believe that Mike and Ted are smart enough to realize the same thing and that if they were really after McDermott, they would know whether or not he will be available.

I think I read somewhere that Ted and Andy Reid get along well and that if McDermott was up for a job... Andy wouldn't block it. Also Steve Spaguonlo had a year on his contract before he left and had no problem.

Not to mention the great equaliser in this whole thing. If we think McDermott is the man... all we have to do is give him assistant head coach status and that would prevent Philly from blocking his move, as it would not be vertical. And with Winston Moss seemingly gone, that title will be vacant.

It is the off season.

IMHO if we start merging everything this forum will end up with two threads that are way to hard to read.

I just attempted to start a conversation about the timing of the situation, the challenges it has due to that timing.

So Sorry Nonstop if this should have been added to another thread.

RP, it's always a judgment call. Some threads truly are redundant; others cover different angles on similar topics. I'm just finding it really hard to follow the arguments on coaching changes right now, because they feel scattered all over the place.

Longer threads make the search function much more useful too. I know some sites where threads go 300, even 400 pages in length; but if you type in a search string, you know exactly in which thread to look for the information you're seeking.

/end thread hijack 😃

Zero2Cool (49m) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (50m) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (1h) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (1h) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (1h) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (1h) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (1h) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (1h) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (2h) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (2h) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (2h) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (2h) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (2h) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (2h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (2h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (2h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (2h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (2h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (2h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (2h) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (2h) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (2h) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (2h) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (2h) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (2h) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (2h) : Packers will get in
beast (2h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (2h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (3h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (4h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (5h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (5h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (5h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (6h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (15h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (16h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (19h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
