NEW ORLEANS -- Coach Mike McCarthy has a good enough football team that he shouldn't need to resort to gimmicks or high-risk moves to win games.

The Green Bay Packers were 5-2 without them heading into Sunday night game's at the New Orleans Saints.

But McCarthy went against conventional thinking on three key occasions in the 44-23 loss at the Superdome.

They were:
• The decision to use outside linebacker Julius Peppers as a receiver/tight end near the goal-line in the first quarter.
  • A surprise onside kick in the first quarter.
  •
A fourth-and-1 run from the Packers' 40-yard line in the third quarter.
1) There really isn't anything good you can say about Peppers

    2) I'm 50-50 on the onsides kick. In hindsight it actually almost looks better since the Packers stopped the Saints' offense once all night?

    3) I believe the Packers were down 2 TDs, needed 18 inches, and again, couldn't stop the Saints whether they started from their own 2, 30, or the Packers 40.

True.....I see the onsides kick as a desperation move, with NO confidence on our defense. (As it turns out, rightfully so.)

Maybe after the bye we can just put our best players out there and play football instead of using silly gimick packages/plays so often on offense and defense.

I don't question going for it on 4th down. I just question running the play behind a terrible back up in Taylor Lane.

Dude was a turnstile all night.

It was the wrong time to call the Peppers play. You run that when ahead, to put it on film for possible use in the future, you don't use it that early in a shootout.

No problem with the onside call, It was almost successful, just didn't get the bounce this time. He has made the same call before with success and little complaining is done than so we shouldn't complain just because the outcome wasn't the same.

I don't call going for it at that point of the game on 4th down a risky call. Punting likely would not have only changed the amount of time left when Flynn was put in.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

True, Packfanwithtwins. If the Peppers play and the onsides kick worked, we'd be singing MM's praises.
As I said, I think MM has no confidence in our D being able to make stops against a good team, and was trying ANYTHING to get an advantage.
IF we make it to the playoffs, we will be playing against good teams and will lose if they don't fix what is wrong.
It will be another "one and done".
Teams have plenty of film now on how to beat the Packers. If they have a decent QB and running back and a D that can stop the pass at all, we will lose.

I think Vic has this one spot on. Excellent play call and if Julius Peppers catches it, those whining about it, would be praising it. Hindsight makes us all brilliant lol

They have to prepare for it because the Packers absolutely pencil-whipped the Saints with that play. I mean, it was genius. You will never see a better example of plays, not players, than you saw on that play. By formation and personnel, the Packers completely compromised the Saints’ defensive look by isolating a very large player on a much smaller player. Everything was perfect according to design. It should’ve been an easy pitch-and-catch touchdown, except one thing went wrong: The pass was dropped. That’s why it’s always players, not plays.
