"We need to tackle the damn ball carrier and put him on the ground," he said. "That's what we'll be focused on."

McCarthy and his staff have the bye week to figure out if they can salvage their run defense, which has not ranked higher than 30th at any point during in the first half of the season and slipped back to 32nd (last) after Sunday's 44-23 loss.

"The run defense was our Achilles' heel clearly on defense," McCarthy said. "Too many missed tackles."

The whole premise of this new defensive "innovation" is that the running game "doesn't matter." The "smaller, quicker" Dline should bait teams into running more, which means they will lose, because "Today's NFL" is all about passing and making big plays in the passing game.

What matters is "opposing QB rating," not stuffing the run, right? If you want to experiment with this defense then do that, don't waver halfway through. He's losing confidence in his own line of bullshit.

The other thing I have an issue with is- isn't tackling something that is a point of emphasis on the first day of TC? Why are they just now talking about it? Isn't tackling a point of emphasis from the first day of whatever peewee football program they played in? Isn't tackling a point of emphasis in high school and college? How can grown men who are paid handsomely who have been playing the damn game for 10 years now suddenly asked to make tackling a point of emphasis? I would want to fire a HC and DC on the spot if they said this after 8 weeks of a season just as a matter of principle.

Is is not that hard. When you see a player make a poor tackle in practice (The practices that allow a player to tackle) pull him aside and chew him out. When you see a player make a poor tackle in preseason bench him. When you see a player make a poor tackle in the first 7 games DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT THEN.

"I’ve seen us through the first half of the season play pretty good run defense, so I feel like we can," defensive coordinator Dom Capers insisted Monday.

So...I think we can all agree that Dom Capers really is blind.

Week 1: 207 total rushing yards
Marshawn Lynch- 110 yards and 2 TDs (5.5 average), Percy Harvin 41 yards (10.1 average)

Week 2: 146 total rushing yards
Chris Ivory- 44 yards (3.7 average), Jeremy Kerly- 37 yards

Week 3: 115 total rushing yards
Reggie Bush- 61 yards and 1 TD (4.8 average), Joquie Bell- 33 yards (2.2 average)

Week 4: 235 total rushing yards
Matt Forte- 122 yards (5.3 average), Kadeem Carey- 72 yards (5.1 average)

Week 5: 111 total rushing yards
Matt Asiata- 72 yards (4.8 average), Jerrick McKinnon- 24 yards (3.4 average)

Week 6: 112 total rushing yards
Lamar Miller- 53 yards and a TD (5.3 average), Ryan Tannehill- 49 yards (16.3 average)

Week 7: 108 total rushing yards
Jonathan Stewart- 50 yards (3.8 average), Cam Newton- 41 yards (5.9 average)

Week 8: 193 total rushing yards
Mark Ingram- 172 yards and 1 TD (7.2 average)

Personally, I don't consider those stats very good. Some stats could be misleading but in no way has Green Bay's run defense been anywhere near "pretty good" aside from Carolina. Also, being ranked 32nd and never being higher than the 30th ranked rush defense is not "pretty good". Tired of Dom giving the run around.

Until we have 3 dlineman in the middle that can occupy blockers we will not have a good run defense.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

I've re watched most of the Saints possessions and if I were to pick THE problem for the run defense I wouldn't pick the defensive line. You guys can crap on those guys all you want but Daniels was about the only player on the whole defense making plays and while Guion had a few where he got pushed around like he usually does he held his ground most of the time. All of our starting LBs besides Clay Matthews just got their butts kicked against the run (Clay still had a few bad looking plays though), especially Peppers and Hawk. Throw in nobody from the secondary being able to tackle at all and you really cannot put this one on the d-line. I guess it's just too easy to blame the line but they looked to me like the strongest group of the defense.

To me, it just shows that if our offense doesn't put up 7's, forcing the other team to throw, we will be in for a LONG second half of the season.
They can just run the ball down our throats.
They need to get someone on the D-line that can stop the run BEFORE the runner gets past them.
Other teams have been doing that to Lacy all season long so far.
We see what Lacy can do once he gets past their D-line. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened much this year so far.
I hope they get on these guys on the bye week, and beat the crap out of them until they get it right.
No pressure on Brees, and no run stopping cost the Packers the chance to win.

Most of the good runs, The Dline was on the LOS or in our defensive backfield with Olineman getting consistently to our ILBers. If an Oline can stonewall Dlineman and get a hat on ILBers, they will take that everyday and the run game will be successful.

Daniels and Guion can handle the job, IF there was a third Dlineman helping them out. That is what is missing. Offenses block one of our OLB with a TE, Single block the other OLB and double the interior peeling off onto the ILBers and than our DBs wiff trying to tackle legs rather than midsection.

It's not just lineman blocking our ILBs it's TEs and FBs. None of them can get off a block from anyone ever and don't even hold their ground, they just get shoved away whichever direction the blocker wants them to go. Also half the time they don't attack the block they try to run around them and end up out of the play without anyone having to block them to begin with. The OLBs especially peppers get washed inside way too easily or just lose contain. It's just lazy to me to say "d-line sucks" when they played better than the rest of the team. I don't know how you can say Daniels wasn't getting penetration because he was even though he was double teamed more than anybody and probably made as many good plays against the run as the rest of the team combined. Guion I would say had at least an average game while I'd put both ILB and Peppers easily below average. Both S were probably worse against the run than the d-line as well.

At this point, I say pull a guy for a series or two if he misses - regardless of his starting or backup roll. I don't care if it is CM3 - if he straight up misses - bench him. What good are you for a defense if you can't tackle anyway?
