Sunday marks the halfway point of the Green Bay Packers' 2014 season, but for defensive coordinator Dom Capers it actually is much more than that. After a sluggish start to the season, Capers' defense has come to life and is finally again performing near the level it was in 2010 when the Packers won Super [...]

I'm not sure the defense has exactly wow'd me the last few weeks, but it has definitely gotten better than how they started. The most encouraging things to me are that the line seems to consistently get pressure on the quarterback and the red zone defense seems to be top notch. As is mentioned in the article, though, the quality of quarterback we have faced is suspect. Winning will mask a lot of issues, but the fact that Geno Smith and Ryan Tannehill (and recently at that!) had periods of success is worrisome.

Before saying the defense is "for real" I'd first need to know what they mean by it?

I think the defense is pretty good (not great) as pass rushing and the DBs are pretty good at covering which is what the defense is based around attacking the passing game.

Is this defense dominant? I'd so no... but can it be dominant? I'd say yes.

To me this defense seems to be based around pressure and playing from ahead (which normally makes the behind team pass the ball more) would fit right into the hands of what the defense seems to be doing... which could potentially perfectly match the Packers offensive style... with Rodgers at the helm, as the other team tries to play keep up with Rodgers.

This defense playing against a run first team like say the Seahawks or Cowboys could cause big problems.... or maybe if a team got a big lead... but I think they would toughen up and help keep them in it for the most part like they did against the Lions. I think a power run first offense with a decently passing game on the side might beat the defense though.

I'm not sure that we're as weak against the run as it looks on paper. It seems like when we've been focused on stopping the run we have for the most part. The only games where the other team running was really having a big impact were Seattle and Chicago. Miami ran the ball like 23 times and got half their yards on 2 runs and got stuffed pretty much the whole game. Don't get me wrong there's a lot of room for improvement there and I'm not confident that we'll stuff every good running team we face but it's early and this defense has been improving on a weekly basis. It certainly looks better at this point in the season than it has since 2010.

This scheme emphasis getting after the passing game which opens up the running game. But when they get into short yardage or goal line stuff they tighten up on the run game.

too light against the run

As the sample size gets larger and larger it is hard to deny the stats and the win/loss record that goes with it. I am enjoying what I see thus far.

This is an easy question to answer: No.

The only chance they really have is if the Packers offense is clicking on all cylinders or if they are playing against a mid-tier or worse quarterback/offense.
