  • Sam Shields - because he has better than CB hands dating from his WR days and elite "got you" speed.
  • Casey Hayward - because he is very smart and knows the routes his enemy will run and can bait the QB
  • [*]Tramon Williams - because he is very consistent and headsie player although he has lost some of his "got you" speed over the years[/list]

I'm conflicted by this situation. They say you can never have too many good Corners, and the events of last Sunday certainly prove that. However, I generally go along with the idea of not overpaying older players. The tiebreaker here is that you can structure contracts to be cap-friendly and back end loaded. I think Ted doesn't maximize doing this enough - it usually isn't necessary. If Williams finishes the season strong, I think I would re-sign him - even for 3 or 4 years, but with not overly much guaranteed money - if that's possible.

While he doesn't make him expendable, he does make it so the Packers don't need to overpay to keep him. I hope Tramon and House are both willing to be team friendly and stick around for a reasonable salary instead of trying to break the bank. We could have one of the best and deepest secondaries.

But I don't expect both to be resigned. I would really have to see the offers they both are given to determine which I would prefer to keep.

With the injuries to Williams and Shields it puts a little bit of a twist to the whole thing. If Tramon is gone next year and injuries flair up again a position that once was pretty deep becomes exposed in a big hurry.

That said if Tramon wants another deal like his last one they will let him walk.

Is Tramon worth what Shields got? The way he has been playing the last couple years I would think so. Perhaps structured with less SB so the later years when he is 34-35 have a higher base but less risk to the team if he would need to be cut.

How about this: $20 million for 4 years - $4 million signing bonus, with salary of $2, 3, 5, and 6 million for the four years. He could be cut after one or two years with minimal cap damage, and he gets what I think would be satisfactory to him both in actual money and prestige of a moderately big contract. And if he is that rare player still who is still top quality at age 35 or 36, we still have him for not too bad a figure.

Last time I checked I was not the GM for the GBP. My knowledge of the market price for a starting CB in 2015 in the NFL is limited to say the least. My knowledge of what the Packers organization expects out of House and Hayward is equally limited. As is my concept of the CBs who will be coming out next year. Try as I may, I can not foresee who will be on the open market with Tramon at the end of the year.

    PC reply-
I also tend to under price the market so I will not be able to speak to the what he will really get. I will say that giving a 32 year old player a 4 year deal is unrealistic. GB has been able to let many WR leave after 2 contracts and have not missed a beat. Maybe that is Uncle Teddy being able to evaluate and draft quality replacements. Perhaps it is because they are playing with Aaron.

If I were to make an offer it would be for 2 years at $8 mil plus a modest signing bonus of $3-5 mil.

The reason for this is because according to a few sites I looked at Tramon is not considered a 10 ten CB. (Maybe everyone hates him I don't know.) The 10th best CBs (2 tied) are scheduled to make $6.9 for the base salary next year. Pretending he really is a top 10 CB I bumped it up to allow for some more players to sign better deals this off season.

FYI - these are some but not all the CBs that were rated better than Williams:
Richard Sherman, Patrick Peterson, Darrelle Revis, Aqib Talib, Alterraun Verner, Joe Haden, Brandon Boykin, Chris Harris, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Brent Grimes, Tramaine Brock, Tim Jennings, Vontae Davis, Johnathan Joseph, Tyrann Mathieu.

Some are some are not. But that should be a whole new discussion.

    3) Hayward... Hayward seems to b very smart and complete nature with his quickness and reading both made and zone. Needs to tackle better but he seems to have it down mentally and physically but still makes mistakes at times.

    4) House... House has a lot of good physical skills, but little slipups... here and there seem to hold him back some from getting his best play on the field.

House gets a chance to earn a phat contract. He's always been a little stiff in the hips, but he's got size and speed. Maybe he's part of that yoga group, I don't know.

What I do know is that he's getting the opportunity to showcase his skills.

Hayward is gonna get a chance to show that his rookie year wasn't a fluke, and that he's back on that level. He might get an early restructure too, I don't know.

House is probably our best cover guy, better than Tramon but not as smart and probably better than Shields but not as fast.

For some reason I don't think Hayward can play outside. I hope to be wrong!

    Mucky Tundra (3h) : Rude!
    beast (4h) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (8h) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (10h) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (12h) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
    dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
    Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
