It was totally gutless on the NFL and Baltimore's part not to see the video a long time ago. I think they did and were too wimpy to act on it. The only did something because they felt like they had a gun to their head.

While I feel bad for Janay Rice her world has been turned inside out and the media attention is stifling I am sure (including us on here) I don;t get why women who have been abused keep going back to the one who abused them. I have seen 100's of women fall into this over and over and over again.

The vikies, the raiders, the jets for sure. Probably 10 other teams if they thought they stood have a chance getting production from him.

I jacked my 1st wife when I was 22. We were both drinking. She threw her infidelity in my face( when I was gone from home). I remember it like it was yesterday. It was just as wrong then as now for me to hit her, but I did.

That was over 35 years ago. WE, as a couple, got over it, the very next day. I had to answer to my father, and her

father, (the General) the next day. We divorced 15 years later, 4 kids later. That punch played a role. Bitch is, ultimately, she deserved that punch, in my mind, at that moment, in time. She fucking drove me.

"One strike and you are out." when you hit a woman. I agree. I can't condemn him, as I have no right to. Life can be complicated.

His wife is not condemning him, and that could easily be due to battered wife syndrome, or "I was highly culpable" (PC- that doesn't exist- she may feel that way) "how in the hell do we make our money?" syndrome, or it could be that they both got over it the next day- or are working through it- and are trying to move on. I'm throwing out the last possibility, as I lived it.

She must have because I have never seen her do anything like that again.

I have said it before, I offered to take a baseball bat to one of my BIL if my FIL told me I could after he knocked around his wife a few times. It would have meant jail time but it would have been worth it.

Then there is a couple of other players, one namely Greg Hardy, that was just found guilty and still has no suspension in place. The NFL reacted because the public seen the tape, period, and the pressure was mounting quickly. No tape for Hardy.. but can you say his crime was less? Read the report (a total recap here) .. I say no way.

Back to the Rice's.. as you state very well.. you moved on.. she moved on. At least temporarily.. but it was still underlying and reappeared at some point. Was she culpable in the event.. possibly, probably in as you explain it. Does it make it right to strike her.. as you say, no it doesn't. The end of my first marriage ended similarly in infidelity, and in a heated discussion, she stood and in front of me and went detail by detail trying to provoke me to gain an advantage in custody. To the point she was screaming for me to hit her.. and I really wanted to. Truth be told.. I wanted to.. but I collected myself and exited. Otherwise I probably would have struck her if she continued and I had stayed. On a single hand, probably one of the top moments in my life were I was extremely angry. So yes, it happens that they will try to provoke it.. at least it did to me. Still wouldn't make it right.

I think part of the problem is Rice hasn't been contrite enough for the court of public opinion, which has been wagging the dogs tail in terms of the NFL reaction. Couple that with actually seeing it.. it has went over the top. Were is the outrage for Hardy? For Terrell Suggs. The NFL barely blinked with Jovan Belcher. Ahmad Brooks. Brandon Marshall.. multiple times he has been accused. A.J. Jefferson. Pacman Jones (multiple). Daryl Washington was sent to jail.. Amari Spievey. Leroy Hill. Chris Rainey. Robert Sands.

Those are just from the beginning of 2013. NFL Arrest source .

So I ask the NFL.. where is the indefinite suspensions for them? Where are the scarlet letter branded upon them like has been done with Rice because of footage? Do you really want to send the message that the degree of punishment should vary because of video footage?

Goodell was awful red faced yesterday in his interview.. I expect more of the same in the coming weeks unless he/they can figure out how to get the reigns around this thing.. suspending a number of players quickly is not the right answer.. in my opinion. Acknowledging that the NFL has an issue, that society has an issue with this, and proactively getting ahead of it in programs, intervention and discipline. Discipline alone will not resolve the current position the NFL.. the shield and its commissioner find themselves neck deep in.
