If we were to only keep 5 guys, I absolutely believe Boykin could've been in trouble.

We know Cobb and Nelson are making it without question, and so is Adams as a 2nd round pick. That eats up the first 3 slots. Only two remain.

Janis is a guy who has measurables that are better than nearly everyone at the WR position in the entire NFL. If he played well, and he has, how are you going to cut that unique specimen? You aren't. That would eat up 4 spots leaving only one more if we were to keep 5.

That leaves Abbrederis vs. Boykin. A 5th rounder, who by all rights, could've gone much higher than he did vs. a guy who came to us via tryout as a UDFA...we didn't even sign Boykin as a UDFA, initially, he only got a tryout to be signed. The hardest road of all. Let's say Abbrederis lit it up like Janis has, which was a real possibility. Do you think it's so unlikely a 5th round hot shot rookie wouldn't be kept over Boykin who has very poor speed? I don't. Yes, Boykin proved to be a solid NFL WR, but he was not a precious draft choice. We all know how those are valued in Green Bay.

To me, it was no stretch at all to say it was well within the realm of possibility that Boykin may not have been Top 5. MM's quote on Boykin was very flattering toward Jarrett, but that was prior to seeing all the guys who would be in competition against him. If forced to choose, how could you easily just say I'd take Boykin over Janis? That is where it likely, in my view, would've come to had Abbrederis not gotten hurt if we were only going to keep 5.

Boykin is a fine WR...I don't dislike him or his game at all. He has excellent hands and knows how to play the position. He's just not flashy and offers little in the way of speed. Abbrederis, Janis, Boykin... Who would you rather hold onto?

As far as Boykins' speed, I don't care. There have been so many "possession receivers" in the NFL it shows teams value guys who run the correct routes and CATCH THE BALL that there was room for Boykin on this team. If speed alone was enough there would be a Renaldo Nehemiah on every team. Having 5 receivers was not set in stone. They may have tried to slip Janis through to the PS.

As much as some of you seem to hate Boykin... he's not getting cut this year... it's been pretty much that simple from the start... you can blah blah blah about this guy or blah blah blah about that guy... simple fact unless Boykins gets injured and does something horrible stupid or evil... he's been basically a lock to make the team.

He's just the new obsession for people to stupidly hate on... I guess they get tired of waiting for Hawk and Bush to get cut and have moved on to Boykin...

My speculation includes the idea that Boykin may not have been a lock if you're going to keep only 5. The Rams broadcast team (Andrew Siciliano) stated on the broadcast the Packers know they can't slip Janis onto the PS, and I believe that was before he went V12 and scored. I think it is a reasonable assumption Janis is making this team.

If you had to choose...who would you cut between the two? Boykin or Janis? That will answer the question about whether it's really so crazy to believe Boykin may not have been Top 5.

No way I risk a guy with the ceiling of Janis for Jarrett Boykin. Fortunately, we don't have to choose.

I think this hypothetical would-they, wouldn't-they about keeping/cutting Boykin/Janis is kind of pointless.

But I also don't think it would have been impossible to keep six WRs. There are a handful of positions where there's a lot of debate over how many to keep.

Players aren't their measurements... they aren't numbers or stats like in Madden. Very talented individuals with incredible physiques sometimes don't pan out, and off-the-radar type guys sometimes succeed. I would feel really dumb if I argued for a JaMarcus Russell over a Tom Brady solely because of where they were picked or what their measurements were.

Janis is no longer a secret that can be hidden on a Practice Squad, so we know now that he will likely make the roster. I'm not really interested in the 'what could've been' discussions over Abbrederis either because it is what it is. I'm just suggesting that Boykin seems under-appreciated sometimes just because he's not wildly fast or because he came in undrafted.
