New Helmets are designed to cut down on head injuries etc...several NCAA teams made a total switch to them..see the link for more.

Thanks for the article. Interesting to hear the concept/intent of the design. I'm skeptical, this isn't the first helmet design that was supposed to reduce concussions, the helmet with the extended jaw comes to mind.

I've read before that the safest helmet is no helmet. If players thing they're safe, they're more apt to use their helmet as a weapon or put themselves in precarious positions.

speaking of football helmet design I noticed that my nephews new youth football helmet seems to have a different shape than the traditional helmet. It seems flatter than the more traditional round shape. Its almost like a bike helmet with not as much of a dome. I can't find any pictures on line that match it. I'll try to get a picture.

Maybe its just been so long since I have seen a good heavy duty football helmet up close that it looks different.
