So close, yet so far away. That’s how fans were feeling as time expired at Lambeau Field this evening.

The 20-23 loss marked the Green Bay Packers’ fourth consecutive defeat to the San Francisco 49ers. Two years in a row now, the Packers have bookended promising seasons with bitter disappointment at the hands of Jim Harbaugh’s Niners.

On the bright side, Green Bay was much more competitive against San Francisco this year than last, losing by a combined nine points compared to the 22-point shellacking they endured in 2012.

Still, that doesn’t make the taste of defeat any easier to stomach. Indeed, it almost makes it harder.

A rout at the hands of a superior foe is never fun, but one quickly grows numb to its effects. There comes a point where one simply laughs and raises a glass to the opponent.

By contrast, A close game introduces that treacherous glimmer of hope. Just as it seems like there might be a real possibility of savoring the sweet sip of victory, it gets ripped away. And it stings.

If this makes it sound like I’m bummed about yet another home playoff loss — since 2001, the Packers have gone 3-5 in home playoff games and just 2-3 in the Mike McCarthy era — it’s because I am.

I like that we start against the Seahawks and I hope we lose.
Having lost that game we could then have a shot at winning when it matters, at the playoffs.
I say that because I don't think we can defeat them twice.

About SF I think it's hopeless, they have our number, but if we get lucky someone might knock them out in the playoffs.

If SF gets eliminated I think we can defeat Seattle and any other NFC team and have a real shot at the SB.

We've added important cogs to our defense, and some serious talent to our offense. If we can stay healthy, we can beat anybody, anytime, anywhere.

I want a win on that Thursday night opener in SEA, and then again should we meet in the playoffs. Same with SF. Bring them on.

With the salary cap every year is a rebuilding year for every team in my opinion. Just be sure you have a franchise QB.

There is a difference between rebuilding and adding a few key players. Just ask the vickies.

I think Ted Thompson did very well with adding to his team this offseason. Very well. I'm actually pretty excited to see what it looks like on the field. I felt there was a pretty big economy in signing Julius Peppers. An immediate upgrade that will make the rest of the D better. Having what I consider to have been a pretty strong draft and UDFA signing period, it kind of puts us right in there.

If Peppers is done, then we're really going to need to be injury free and see some big development from some of our young guys.

It's crazy talk that we can't beat Seattle, twice... I hope we go in there on opening NFL night and whip the &%$( out of them. I want to be the #1 seed and winning at Seattle is a great way to kick off that pursuit.

SF does have our number...we had theirs for years. It is really something that we only lost by 3 to them last year. Our D had almost nobody left on it, and if Hyde can make that play we're likely going to Carolina to beatdown a very overrated Panthers team. I think we would've lost at Seattle, but who knows? If SF was consistently whipping us, which they aren't but did in 2012, I think we can overtake them this season. Aldon Smith is a big distraction and he may be serving a pretty big suspension. Justin Smith is 35. Bowman is coming off a terrible knee injury and Willis has been beat up a bit. Not a surprise they picked up some ILB's in this draft. Aaron needs to get over whatever it is he has against these guys. I know they were his favorite team growing up and he wished like crazy they would've drafted him but he has to play better against them. Kaepernick doesn't seem to have any issues against us but, then again, he has to go against the much easier D. Niners are kind of like our Pistons, but we've already won one, so that doesn't hold. Still, they seem to be the team more than Seattle we have to figure out.

I think we can do both this season if injury free.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."
