GREEN BAY — The competition for the Green Bay Packers' starting center job is on.

The plan, for now, is to let youngsters JC Tretter, Garth Gerhart and rookie fifth-round pick Corey Linsley battle to take over as the starter in the wake of Evan Dietrich-Smith's free-agent departure, but offensive line coach James Campen would not rule out veteran players — like guards T.J. Lang or Josh Sitton or tackle Don Barclay shifting to center if necessary.

"You never know what happens," Campen said after Linsley was taken with the 161st overall pick in the NFL Draft Saturday. "But we have other guys that have played. Obviously T.J. has been in there. Josh has snapped balls for us, Donnie Barclay has snapped balls for us. Those things will be decided moving forward, but if you really looked at it right now, you have three guys that are centers, that are going to play center and they're going to battle it out."

Linsley was the sixth true center taken during the draft, after Weston Richburg of Colorado State (second round, No 43); Marcus Martin of USC (third, No. 70); Travis Swanson of Arkansas (third, No. 76); Bryan Stork of Florida State (fourth, No. 105); and Russell Bodine of North Carolina (fourth, No. 111).

Whoever ends up with the job will give the Packers their fourth different opening-day starter in four years, with Scott Wells having started the 2011 opener, Jeff Saturday the 2012 opener and Dietrich-Smith last year. Tretter suffered a broken ankle during the first organized team activity practice last May, opened the season on the physically unable to perform list and did not suit up for a game once he was activated to the 53-man roster at the end of the year.

"Yeah, everyone would like to have some stability there," Campen said. "But in reality, everyone comes in and learns the system. There are two very good guards that are very smart and obviously a very smart quarterback (in Aaron Rodgers), so the progression of learning is accelerated when you have smart people around him.

"Certainly you'd like to have the same center and quarterback. Who wouldn't (want them) on the same wavelength? But I'll say this, you look at the short time that Aaron and JC have been together now and they're flowing very well. ... So I don't think that's a problem."

For the past several years I expected GB to take a center in the lower rounds. I realize a lot of fans wanted GB to take a center higher in the draft. It just doesn't seem to be Uncle Teddy's thing.

The battle in TC will be interesting. As of now I am giving Tretter the edge.

competition and depth.

I don't think they would keep two true centers but if Linsley can long snap it would work out. Just enough versatility there to justify a spot.

beast (23-Feb) : Seems like he was just pissed because he was no longer the starter
beast (23-Feb) : Campbell is right, he's rich and he doesn't have to explain sh!t... but that attitude gives teams reasons to never sign him again.
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I have some doubt about all that
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I read De'Vondre Campbell's tweet this morning (via the New York Post) Florio says that if he invested his earnings wisely, he will be good

dfosterf (20-Feb) : Hasn"t Bosa missed more games than he has played in the last 3 years?

Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : NFL informed teams today that the 2025 salary cap will be roughly $277.5M-$281.5M
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Los Angeles Chargers are likely to release DE Joey Bosa this off-season as a cap casualty, per league source.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : If the exploit is not fixed, we'll see tons of "50 top free agents, 50 perfect NFL team fits: We picked where each should sign in March" lo
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Issue should be solved, database cleaned and held strong working / meeting. Boom!
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : even with the rapid fire posts?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I'm not certain it's a bot.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I've got to go to work soon which is a pity because I'm enthralled by this battle between the bot and Zero
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, I see what that did. Kind of funny.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : now it's a link to Wes Hodkiezwicz mailbag
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Now they're back with another topic
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : oh lol

Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : They got 118 slapped in there.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : that's why it confused the hell out of me
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, but this is taking a headline and slapping it into the Packers Talk
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Wasnt there a time guests could post in the help forum?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : lol good question, kind of impressed!
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : So how is a guest posting?
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Tell them its an emergency
