Packers to give JC Tretter first shot at center job

When Scott Wells left following the 2011 season, the Green Bay Packers elected to sign Jeff Saturday in free agency to fill their hole at the center position. As it turns out, the best answer was already on their roster in Evan Dietrich-Smith. The Packers are hoping the same logic will apply this time around...

Hoping Tretter pans out. Wouldn't be against drafting someone or keep tabs on some vets who've played the position.

As I mentioned before I was a little surprised when they drafted JC. After I read a little about him I realized he was EDS replacement. I was hoping he would get at least 1 season before stepping in and 2 would be better. With his injury last year he didn't really get a full year under his belt.

There are Centers who pull and do more sophisticated stuff, and there are Centers who basically just snap and handle the middle in both runs and pass plays. The Packers seem to view the position the second way. Consequently, just about any marginally decent O-Lineman can do the job. Hence the light effort to re-sign EDS and the virtual handing the job to Tretter. If we need an alternative, a low round pick or UDFA or maybe bringing back Gerhart would probably be good enough.

I guess it's worth pointing out they might give Barclay a shot there as well since they'll bump him inside since he's not fast enough on the outside. Though if they do they need to let him work on it and through growing pains instead of yo-yoing him around like they did last TC.
