Not sure how true this is

http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/83432-sources-cowher-didnt-want-to-coach-favre?eref=fromSI

Talks between the Jets and Cowher never advanced past the preliminary stage.

Sources close to Cowher said he did not want to have Favre as his quarterback, and that he also wanted to bring in people he was familiar with to handle personnel.

A source familiar with Cowher's thinking said before last night's decision came down that the former Steeler boss would have to receive assurances from the Jets that the 39-year-old Favre no longer was in the picture before agreeing to take control.

That is a potential issue.. if Brett doesn't give you the best chance to win.. you have to combat the pressure of sitting him.. especially if the ownership is mandating the Brett be the face of the offense, which it sounds to be the case.

That is not a bash on Favre.. whether or not he can get it done.. it is a situation in which the coach has no options.. and if you don't need to coach, it might not be the most alluring situation to walk into.

Add the management issue.. I could see a person in Bill's spot passing.

If you are going to be responsible for the product.. you should have a comfortable say in the components to get you there.

Hmm... it's possible that he's under the impression that Favre wouldn't listen/defer to him, or something. I could see that being a bit unattractive from Cowher's perspective - I would imagine that his desire would be to stroll in and re-make the team the way he wanted it to be from the ground up, which would be hard to do w/ someone of Favre's stature in place.

Personally, I think the idea that Favre doesn't accept coaching is probably an exaggeration at the least. Still, if that's the impression Cowher has, I can see why he wouldn't want to deal with that while trying to re-build a franchise.

my guess is that since Brett may or may not be there in 2009, or 2010, Bill wants a solid option at q/b to really get the team off on the right foot

I do not think it has anything to do with level of play or talent..

I don't see why Brett would be an issue for the incoming coach. Unless you're a Clemens fan, the Jets don't have a QB of the future. A new coach can draft his guy this year and let him learn on the bench for a year, then Brett's gone. I almost think it would be ideal to have a year of leeway.

I guess it would also depend on how long the guy wants to coach. If he pnly wants to do that for a few more years, he might not want to join a team where they don't have a long term QB there already. Otherwise he has to wait the however many years it would take to draft and groom a new guy.

I think Cowher would LOVE to coach Brett Favre. Brett Favre is the kind of football player Cowher loves. If this is true, it has to be situational as described by previous posters. I could see those two butting heads, and I mean literally, on the sidelines after Brett does a "good Brett" thing. To me they are a match made in heaven, and it is too bad it will not come to pass, as I would have liked to have seen that.

My point is simply this on the topic.. a coach needs to come into a organization with the ability to make changes he sees fit.. starting out with and investing in a QB with very little playing days left isn't a prime option.

Few coaches come in an compete for the Lombardi year one.. it generally takes a couple of seasons.. investing heavily into a short timer isn't ideal.. especially one that comes will all the pub that Favre carries..

Me.. I won't want the job as it sits either.. you have a fan base the has high expectations.. and you have little ability to stamp your own feel to the roster.. That isn't just because of Favre.. it is because of the countless other FA they added this past offseason.. and a cap situation that isn't healthy.

I have seen on ESPN that the new coach will have a say-so on what they do with Brett. Could this be an easy way for Brett to get his release( things that make you go hmmmmmm) Maybe this could have been set up before and Brett and the GM already had this planned easy way around the no trade to NFC north clause.

Just somethings to think about.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.

dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
