I think you're grossly mistaking HOPE for LOVE and that's a shame, an awful shame. No one knows what Sean Richardson can bring, however, he has the measurable of potentially being a good Safety. That is what has people hopeful, or perhaps intrigued.

As for not seeing much positive, then you obviously missed the preseason games, which is a bummer for you because the guy was constantly around the ball making plays. That is what got my attention. It seemed every play, he was there in on the tackle. I took notice to that.

Does that mean he's going to be Nick Collins or Ed Reed? Nope, not at all, but for me and many others, it is something we can HOPE translates into something positive for the Packers at the Safety position. Because lets be honest, there isn't a whole lot of "positivity" in the backend lol.

But an average-to-decent back up safety is not good enough for the Packers starting safety. If he becomes the starting safety, then the trend of average at best safety play is likely to continue. It's just not good enough to get it done unless the Packers have an absolutely dominate pass rush, which they do not. The pass rush isn't horrible, but it's inconsistent. I'm all for focusing on the pass rush and hoping that compensates for the back end, but both areas need substantial improvement, especially when arguably the teams top two pass rushers can't stay healthy.

We can "hope" all we want, but that's unlikely to translate to much. I hope Richardson improves and can become a good #3 safety, but I certainly hope the Packers aren't expecting him to be the answer at the position, because he's not. IMO, of course.

I don't think writing Sean Richardson off as 'awful' this early is remotely justified. Keep in mind, I'm not saying the Packers should put all or even any eggs in the Richardson basket. All I've said is, the guy has shown a knack for being around the ball, being a good tackler and he has the size and speed to be a good Safety.

If I was told Packers could have Jarius Byrd OR Brian Orakpo, I'd take the latter. This draft is supposed to be "loaded" with Safeties. But I feel the better your defensive line is, the better your backend will be. Spending loads of money on Secondary, I feel is like putting a piece of gum on a leak in your fishing boat. It doesn't solve the problem, it just weakly attempts covers up the real issue.

In spite of that, I do think he has a chance to flourish at the position with his size and speed, and this next season it looks like he may get a better chance to show what he can really do.

The big problem with counting solely on draft & develop is the latter part of that equation. Many times, Safeties require a few years with regular reps before a team is able to realize top level play, should they develop into a top talent. This goes for other positions too. We count so heavily on these young players learning the way without the bonus of having a -quality- veteran mentor to help them learn the nuances of their position, and how to excel at the NFL level.

I'd rather spend the dough at this super important position on a FA who is one of the NFL's best, and offset the financial hits elsewhere. We've seen the folly of trying to compete regular season and playoffs without a quality veteran there. Can't move forward till this position is addressed IMO. Hitting on a rookie to take up that slack seems a very big gamble. Counting on Sean Richardson to do it is nearly as big a gamble. But, I doubt we actually make a play for Byrd, and we'll be gambling Vegas style. Again.

Thanks to my amazing MS Paint skills([sarcasm]), you can now see what Byrd would look like in a Packers uniform

Since he's now a Green Bay Packer, Byrd immediately suffers two serious injuries. Fear not though, Byrd continues to play despite needing a crutch, an arm sling and his foot covered in cast! Look at him run that ball!

Sure, he absolutely may take the next step this off season and become a great player, but it's a big gamble. It's certainly not a gamble I would want to take if my job depended on it. I think Richardson has a ways to go to even be a good back up safety. I think he can be easily exploited in coverage, has stiff hips, and doesn't react fast enough. He's decent at playing the run, though. Perhaps the Packers could get by with that if they still had a player like Nick Collins beside of him, but they don't. They have another average player in Morgan Burnett.

That's just not going to be good enough to get it done. That's leaving a lot up to hoping that multiple players play substantially better than last year, or that some rookies contribute early (assuming no free agents, of course). It could all come together, but I would say the chances are higher that they won't come together perfectly.

Ted's just more of gambler than me, that's all. He's much more trusting of 21-23 year olds than I am. It would make me very nervous.
