Once upon a time, Green Bay Packers General Manager Ted Thompson dipped into the waters of free agency and emerged with big fish in the form of Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett. What's that you say? No way Thompson did that? Well, yes, he did.

People do not tend to remember the 2006 season, especially given it followed a terrible 4-12 2005, but it is a reminder that Ted Thompson knows that sometimes you just have to make a move.

All of the free agents that were under contract for the Packers in 2012 are on the exact same free agent list as all the other guys then yes he will utilize free agency. Sam Shields?, James Jones? James Starks, Ryan Pickett? BJ Raji?some of these guys will be signed. He has utilized free agency many times in the past. He signed James Jones a few years back. I think he signed John Kuhn as well as a host of others whose names escape me at the moment. Most people ignore these and make the claim that they are not really free agent signings but when these players have the exact same opportunity to sign with any team in the league as the rest of the guys on the list they are free agents just like any other guy on the list.

As far as someone like Orakpo or Byrd, we could afford one of them. If Ted Thompson thought it would be worth it he would find a way to get it done.

Why the hell isn't Washington resigning Orakpo? What happened? Scared of his injury history?

CB - Tramon Williams, Casey Hayward, Hyde/House
S - Morgan Burnett, Byrd/Ward

or

CB - Tramon Williams, Casey Hayward, Sam Shields
S - Morgan Burnett, Rookie/Jennings/Richardson

Not that both options couldn't necessarily happen I'm just saying letting Shields walk wouldn't totally cripple us. I think Shields was at least a top 3 player for us this year on D but CB is the 1 position on D we could make a sacrifice to boost a weaker position group.
