Is it just me, or are some people exaggerating how "awful" it was to be a Packers fan in the 70s and 80s?

I enjoyed it, personally. Would I have liked more winning? Of course. But I don't recall it being the torture some are making it out to be.

Where can the Packers use a top tier FA? And what can the team afford?

1 along the Line. DT or DE to go along with Kampman,Pickett and Jenkins. With the rest of the D, there are not big holes anywhere. Improvement would be through 2nd tier or draft.

Offensively there is need in the Oline.

Problem is that with the available money, if as everybody wants, Ted Thompson gets Jennings locked up before next season, then there is only room for 1 big signing or 2-3 lesser signings.

I would vote for the 2-3 lesser players. 2 Oline 1 Dline. Then hopefully a couple players from the draft also.

Yeah. That 2 OL, 1 DL sounds about right. I think Jenkins injury really hurt us, because we lost Corey Williams in the offseason, then Jenkins got hurt. With Jenkins back next year and one more solid DL, we should be good. Maybe even 2 DL, the extra to replace KGB (who has lost a step and I wish the guy well, but he's no longer a good player). I really want to see depth on the DL which is what's killing our D.

As for the OL - 2, maybe even 3. I do believe in building through the draft but if a FA is available, grab him. We have the nucleus of a good team. The weakness is our lines on both sides.

As for what we can afford, I think we're pretty low below salary cap and it shouldn't be a problem to pick up your 2 OL/1 DL.

I can see what you're saying, but as someone who was also a growing lad learning how to play I think I learned a good deal about sportsmanship and priorities from watching the Pack.

I don't want to make it seem like winning is unimportant - it obviously is. But I personally got a lot from being a Packers fan (and do note that for the first 19 or so years I was a Packers fan in Bears territory), even though they weren't a great franchise at the time. Still loved watching them, still loved various players over the years (man, I still remember how utterly stoked I was when they got Jefferson), still learned a lot. And hell, understanding that losing wasn't the end of the world was probably the most important lesson of all.

But given the choice I prefer the post '92 era. Don't get me wrong.

I think the larger issue here is whether or not Ted (and MM) have a pulse on the team.

The whole Favre fiasco no doubt tested the players, as did the fall out from it. Losing 5 straight no doubt tested the players, as did the constant falling of our D.

I think Ted realized that with Brett he lost not just a HOF QB, but a valuable leader that created a void. Mid-season, his attempts to get Tony Gonzalez were aimed at filling that void somewhat.

This point specifically leads me to believe that Ted and Mike McCarthy have a pulse on their team, and if they understood the leadership void at mid-season they likely understand it is still there right now.

Hence I wouldn't be surprised to see Ted do a couple of "unusual" things for him, like trade a 3rd rounder for Tony G., perhaps go after a couple of good FAs that aren't top caliber, but still veterans and solid performers.

That's why I think this off-season Ted will sign a couple of guys at least, and while I'd love them to be the big name guys, that isn't going to be likely. I'll be fine as long as he does something to address the needs of this team.

I myself started rooting for the Pack in the 70's. For me that is why I think I have a little more patience and a broader perspective than some. I still found players to cheer for but it was a different time.

The big difference though is that in them days, there was not the coverage as today. There was not 24 hr sports shows that have to kill time, there was not the coverage of the draft, and there was not FA like today. Had there been, Starr would not have been the coach as long as he was.

As for the team now, they are not as far away as some may like to think, and I do not believe as some that Ted Thompson will avoid FA. He has said he builds teams through the draft, yes, but no where has he said he doesn't utilize FA. I believe that he just waits until the time is right. And that time is here, now it is time to show everyone that he can finish the team.

Just for fun, a little hypothetical excercise:

Say you're... let's go with Julius Peppers. Now, you've been watching your Sports Center and have seen that the Packers have canned their DC, hired an upgrade (specifics not important for this scenario - make it whoever you think would be such an upgrade) and have publicly committed to turning the defense around.

Then you go to Honolulu and Woody gives you an earful about the upsides to being in GB - how he thought it would suck and was wrong. How in GB the fans actually still love the players. How they don't need much to get back on top in the NFC, just a couple key guys...

Then you look at the personnel -- Kampy on the left, a healthy Jenkins in the middle w/ a rotation of Jolly, Pickett, etc. in the DT position. Fast, athletic LBs, and one of the better secondaries in the league. You mentally add yourself to that personnel grouping and you imagine the possibilities.

Then the Packers offer you a fair deal -- maybe not stupidly large, but plenty of money for sure.

Do you go for it? I would.

I'd most likely have no choice because I had been tagged, but watching hypothetically.... I would.

Even without the addition of another Defensive Cordinator I would, our D-line would be pretty good once again, just lke last year. The secondary has only become better by experience, our LB core is still the same with the addition of a good ass defender in Chillar and the D-line will be up to par with the 2007 one.

If you add a defensive Cordinator who's an upgrade over Sanders, I couldn't say no. Seems like a pretty good defense to play in. Looks like the funadementals for a deep play-off run on the defensive side.

All depends on what other teams are after me. If im getting offers from contenders it's easy i'm going there. I really don't see us getting any big name FA at all. Like was brought up earlier there was a vet here asking for some help and they fell on deaf ears, So will woody and Harris be here next year. Stay tuned because you just never know.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)
