I thought he was a restricted free agent, but I could be wrong. Even if he's unrestricted, I find it hard to believe he'll get starter's money anywhere. The team would have to be desperate for receiving help.

So the year on the Chargers roster in Amsterdam doesn't count?

I think we can resign him for minimal money, it all depends on how far Swain has come and if we draft another receiver in the draft... but that's pretty much saying what everyone already has.

Montgomery could be released in my eyes, Thompson should be progressing and getting up in the depth chart over Montgomery next year, while Jenkins should be back to regain his starter roll. He isn't a real contributer that way anywhere, so just let him go, I'd say.

Alot of coaches will be fired this week and some even today. We need to dump our def coor and special teams coach now and start talking to these guys. If we wait a week or two and do it, then some of these guys will be hired by then. We will get the leftovers.

Marinneli got the axe this morning (no I don't want him). So did Mangini. Crennel is expected to be dumped later today. He might be a interesting Def coordinator again. Possibly Marvin Lewis? I would love to see him in GB. I'm still not convinced Wade Phillips will not get the axe soon as well. He was a good coordinator. There will be others as well.

Ted Thompson has to be the aggressor here. If he sits back and uses the "wait and see" approach like he has in the past, the good ones will be gone and we will have to choose from the bottom.

It starts now. Ted Thompson is on the clock. He will make or break his legacy this offseason.

No, he will make or break his legacy in the actual season. The year we went from 8-8 to 13-3 we hardly made any changes.

Regarding players

I believe Mark Tauscher is going to be not retained.

As far as veterans being released. Chad Clifton seems like the first obvious candidate. He's really worn down in my opinion.

I'd be hesitant to release these two, especially in light of what Woodson said today.

Basically, Woodson said the team needs to bring in more vets, implying there is a leadership void from when Brett departed that never really got filled. Cliffy and Taush are two of the vet. leaders that we can't afford to lose (assuming you give Woodson's assessment credence).

That said, Cliffy has one year left on his deal, so cutting him wouldn't cost a huge financial hit. I still think he has something to offer, especially if the team decides to lessen the Zone blocking.

As for Taush, seeing as had such a major injury (If I were Ted) I'd look to see if Taush could be brought back for cheap. Maybe give him an incentive based deal, or a two year contract that sees the backend of the contract loaded heavily.

I do think Montgomery should be gone though, I don't think he has the kind of talent to contribute if (when?) the Packers add quality depth to their d-line. I'd look for one of Pettaway or Hunter to be cut, since both are ST aces, and dedicating two spots to essentially ST players of the same ilk isn't going to happen.

From what I heard neither Clifton or Tauscher are locker room leaders. They more so lead by their play on the field which was about average this year anyways. Tauscher's injury and the fact I think his contract is up anyways means there really is little incentive in bringing him back.

I think Woodson is implying that the team needs to be active in free agency and sign some veterans. I think you replace at least one of the tackles with a veteran and a good one at that and maybe even bring in a guard too.

I don 't think Thompson's philosophy of drafting 3rd round lineman to be starters right away is working.

Our history at O-line suggests that you have to build a line up, and not just "acquire" it via the draft or FA.

Anyone here interested in going after Vilma?

I do believe that there is a meeting on Wednesday to review this past season. Maybe they'll decide to dump Sanders then.

Oh, that's a tough one... I like Vilma a lot, the dude's 100% heart. And I actually think Barnett would be a lot more willing to move outside than people are saying (I don't personally recall any evidence that he's an attitude problem, but maybe I'm forgetting something), so when you factor that in it's sure tempting.

Hawk and Barnett on the outside and Vilma in the middle? Yeah, I think that'd be okay.

He's locked up w/ the Saints though, right?

Nope.. based on conditions with the trade.. he is a free agent and the Saints compensation was increased based on his play.
