OK, all the nice words about wanting him to have a good life, not be messed up in the future, whatever, aside, what about Jermichael Finley? He was/is going to be a free agent at the end of this season, right? So even before the injury thing, there was going to be a major decision coming up - keep him for big money or let him go. Now, even if he is able to play again, the Packers or anybody else are going to be thinking long and hard about risking any significant money on him. Conclusion: even if his surgery is a complete success and he is able to continue his career, I'm pretty sure we have seen the last of him as a Packer.
Not to speak ill of the injured, but I'm OK with that. I think of Finley at his best - this year - breaking tackles, mostly putting the drop thing behind him, showing some toughness in general, and then I see Jimmy Graham, Jason Witten, Gronkowski (past), Antonio Gates (past or present), and Finley just doesn't stack up. Yet he woulda commanded just as big money as those guys, and who knows if he would have reverted to what he was before this season.
Some people don't like Quarless? Why? I see him as almost as good running after the catch as Finley, just as good a receiver, a better blocker, and not a head case. Bostick is just starting out, but he too shows promise of being NFL quality, maybe as good or better than Finley in time. Even Stoneburner shows flashes.
Kick me in the ass (as some goody goodies sometimes do hahaha) for expressing a Packer-selfish point of view, but 1. I don't think we would have retained Finley anyway; 2. I think we will be just as well off without him; and 3. We won't have to worry (probably) about seeing him go to some other team and playing great.
