A.J. Hawk's a conspiracy. There are times he plays very, very well. Sometimes he does not. Frankly, today may have been the best game of his career. He was phenomenal. He plugged holes, was amazing in pursuit, and displayed explosiveness as a pass rusher.
It is worth noting, however, that the defensive line plays a significant role in a linebacker’s ability to make plays. Hawk was awful in 2011. Sorry Buckeye, but that’s a forgettable year. But the d-line was bad, too. Last year, Hawk made strides and was an average player. The d-line graded out very similar. Actually, it was an average defensive performance across the board.
This year, the d-line is playing amazing football. They dominated Baltimore up front and Hawk's been more good than bad. Put a good defensive line in front of Hawk and he can be an impact player. That's what happened today. It’s happening to the entire defense. As the defensive line goes, so does this Packer defense.
I still worry about our safeties, though. 🙏
