More fodder to discuss..

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR DOM CAPERS

1. What adjustments needed to be made -- or were made, but didn't work -- as 49ers wide receiver Anquan Boldin was on his way to a 13-catch, 208-yard game?

CAPERS: We had some double calls in there. As a matter of fact, two of his catches -- the touchdown pass, we had a double on him and he just beat the double, and the very first third down of the second half, we had them to third-and-9 and we had a double call on him and that's when I think it was a 22-yarder on a 7 route. So, it wasn't like we didn't have things up and ready. We just didn't execute with the kind of efficiency you need to against a veteran receiver that's been doing that for a long time. He's a good physical receiver, and we felt that we might need to double him at times, but when we did we really didn't do a real good job of it.

2. Colin Kaepernick beat you mostly with his legs in the playoff game eight months ago, now he did it entirely with his arm. What makes Kaepernick better -- or different -- as a mobile quarterback?

CAPERS: I think he can do both. He obviously has a strong arm. And those guys that can buy time, they give those vertical receivers more time to work up the field. They've got (Vernon) Davis, who's a rare guy because he's probably the fastest guy on their team as a tight end. So they're always seeking to try to get that matchup with him inside on a linebacker. You'd see when they'd empty out and go to no backs, he was normally in line as one of those inside receivers trying to get a match-up on a linebacker. So it's a combination of their speed to get vertical and Kaepernick's ability to buy time to let those routes develop.

3. When did you make the decision to put Johnny Jolly in as a starter in the base 3-4 defense for this game?

CAPERS: I think we will have a combination of guys. I don't know we really have a starting end right now. Johnny played a number of snaps yesterday, but I think if you look at our rotation we played – C.J. (Wilson) had a number of snaps, Mike Daniels had a number of snaps. We're going to need all those guys to play for us because you have days like (Sunday) when it's warm and you have to keep rotating so guys don't get worn out. We had an awful lot of plays and the type of game it was, we were probably in our Okie defense more than what we normally are because they were in two tight ends, two backs and regular personnel with two wide receivers and two backs for most of the game. We probably played maybe as little sub (in Sunday's game) as we've played for awhile.

Another question- For the past several years GB has been poor at best when it comes to closing out a series. They showed this weakness again against SF.

3rd down efficiency GB 4-10 SF 9-18
4th down efficiency GB 0-0 SF 1-1

What are you going to do to stop the opposition drives before they score and get the defense off the field?

At times I was wildly impressed. Kaepernick never seemed to have any scrambling lanes. The defensive front did a great job of maintaining lane discipline and holding at the point of attack on almost every play, I thought. Our front seven seemed to be everywhere, and I loved watching them swarm.

The secondary seemed back and forth though. The safeties appeared to be playing a little cautiously, as if they were really concerned about not getting beat deep. Which I understand, but it often meant they couldn't get down to help the corners on time on short routes and in zone. The coverage from the DBs seemed pretty tight actually, it was just that nobody made the big play. I feel like we missed Hayward, and really missed Burnett, but that's not a good excuse. I wish that someone in the secondary would have stepped up, been a hero, and made a game changing play on a ball in the air.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying, is I'm not placing the blame on Capers. We just didn't quite get it done on the field.

Nevertheless the defense allowed too many first downs and I would like to know how he, as the coach in charge of these men, would handle the situation. Change defensive tactics to try and hide the weakness of the players? Coach them differently and have them take more chances? Say there is nothing wrong and keep doing the same for a few more years? Go out and get new players in next years draft to take the place of the ones he has?

Keep in mind I am not speaking only about the SF game. My post mentioned that the Packers defense has had this problem for several years. So it much more than the 4 or 5 db that were on the field Sunday afternoon.

Wayne said what also bothers me.
I have seen so many times where the Packer defense (not just this season, but for many) has done a good job on 1st and 2nd down, then give up a 1st down on 3rd down.
If you can't get the other team's O off the field, you won't win many games, or make it far in the playoffs. (See our 15-1 season)

If I was going to critique Capers and staff at all, is they seem to have exotic packages and plays for everything.. even when inserting young players into critical situation.

At times.. the Monte Kiffin school of thought might be better.. the KISS equation. Keep it Simple Stupid.

By having exotic coverage packages behind exotic blitz packages.. there is bound to be communications or read mistakes leading to blown assignments. When Boldin splits a coverage untouched, there either is a player lapse or a scheme "hole".. and as a fan we know not what the cause just it looks horrible.

That there, I think leads to the "Piss and Moan" club comments.. and the this defense sucks donkey nu...

When our defense has been good, it has been becuase we get to the QB. We didn't againts SF for the most part. We MUST be able to get pressure on the QB or it doesn't matter who the secondary is.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

dfosterf (26-Jun) : I think it would be great to have someone like Tom Grossi or Andy Herman on the Board of Directors so he/they could inform us
dfosterf (26-Jun) : Fair enough, WPR. Thing is, I have been a long time advocate to at least have some inkling of the dynamics within the board.
wpr (26-Jun) : 1st world owners/stockholders problems dfosterf.
Martha Careful (25-Jun) : I would have otherwise admirably served
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Also, no more provision for a write-in candidate, so Martha is off the table at least for this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : You do have to interpret the boring fine print, but all stockholders all see he is on the ballot
dfosterf (25-Jun) : It also says he is subject to another ballot in 2028. I recall nothing of this nature with Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy is on my ballot subject to me penciling him in as a no.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : I thought it used to be we voted for the whatever they called the 45, and then they voted for the seven, and then they voted for Mark Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Because I was too lazy to change my address, I haven't voted fot years until this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
Zero2Cool (25-Jun) : Maybe wicked wind chill made it worse?
