Unusual to see a DB and a WR "fighting for a roster spot." I doubt this is the scenario that will come to be when final cuts are made, but for the sake of argument - what the hell.
Ross has shown he can be an alright wide out, but he seems to lack a few things to put him in the "good to great" category. Under the assumption that our starters will begin the season healthy, we have a lot of options at that position. He seems best suited for short quick passing situations, but we have others that can handle that role too. I'm not trying to say Ross is terrible or anything like that, I just don't see him as valuable as other potential players - - - - BUT that muffed punt in SF still sticks in my mind.
This brings us to Hyde. Watching him early on I was iffy about him. I saw him make a lot of plays near the line (some even behind.) What concerned me was seeing him get torched on some deep passes, which is scary considering our pass rush has been on and off. With that said - he has been a lot better in coverage since then. If he is making improvements this rapidly in preseason, I have to imagine he will only get better. Truth being - I think he fits best into this defense in a safety roll or covering slot receivers (and this is actually an issue we have seen exploited a lot the past couple of years.)
If I had to choose one of these players, I would rather keep Hyde. There are multiple players that can return punts, so I don't think the position of PR would be a deciding factor. Now we wait to see....
