Well, since we're all football fans and part of being a football fan is looking at useless stats and reading heavily into them, here's more of that.
I think I have a good case for Leon Washington being the most underutilized player in the NFL.
Almost every time Leon Washington touches the ball, there's a chance for magic. He's extremely explosive, like a Randy Moss or a Steve Smith. He's amazingly had 8 TDs, 5 on the ground, 2 receiving, and 1 KR. Yet, he barely touches the ball. His most receptions in a game was only 6. And he's yet to have more than 12 rushes in a game (in '08). Note that the more rushes in a game, the more likely to win. The Jets haven't lost a game this year when Washington has had more than 3 rushes.
Rushing attemps - Result
Miami - 6 rushes, W
Pats - 2, L
Chargers - 1, L
Arizona - 7, W
Cincinatti - 5, W
Oakland - 3, L
Chiefs - 3, W
Buff - 7, W
St. Louis - 12, W
Pats - 5, W
Titans - 8, W
Den - 2, L
Niners - 1, L
Buff - 1, W
Seahawks - 3, L
2 things:
1) Why aren't the Jets a run first team? They should be. I don't think Mangini's doing the right thing here.
2) Why doesn't Washington get the ball more? It's obvious that whenever he touches the ball, there's a chance for a TD. Come on. 5 TDs rushing with never more than 12 carries and only once double digit carries? Get the ball more to Leon Washington.
