Don Barclay worked as the Packers’ No. 1 right tackle in practice but Mike McCarthy wouldn’t declare him the starter.

It is Barclay's job to lose. Newhouse will back up at both Tackle positions. We will see how strong Sherrod is in a few weeks. My guess is that he ends back up on the IR for the rest of the season. Builds back up his strength and tries again next year.

Yes Sherrod should get another IR year in my opinion then it is give it your best shot next year where I fully expect him to compete strongly for a starting tackle job. I like coaches speak here though, it continues to keep drive and dedication high. Barclay needs to play well enough in this third game like his job depends on it, so that is good motivation, and we all know every game is still a tryout for keeping your own job anyway!

I think the best case is really if Barclay steps up and beats Newhouse outright for the job, and then Newhouse can be the swing backup tackle. It seems like the consensus is that Newhouse is a below average starter, but would make a pretty good backup.

I'm hoping that the younger guys will step up, particularly Barclay, and make this a better OL.
Of course, James Campen is still OL coach so........

Yeah yooper, I want to see us start mauling other defenses with the run game. I can't wait, and I hope to see that on a regular basis. Mike McCarthy calling for the maul will help solidify and unify this OL. It will help all the other stuff, pass protection and pass production. It will open up all the big plays McCarthy clearly wants to make in the passing game. Get those guys with their ears pinned back and a steady dose of beat-the-piss-out-of-the-guy-in-front-of-you... Any formidable pass rush we face will be worn out and ineffective. Ball control. Time of possession. If Mike calls a heavy dose of run - for the full season, I think this OL, with Barclay at RT, could find themselves to be one of the best in the NFL. We need the mauler mentality.

Please, please, please...

Barclay seems to be taking a tighter and tighter grip on the RT position, or is it just me ?

Would be interesting to see Datko step up enough to earn a spot.

Also if Datko and Sherrod are still around (either on the roster or on the PUP), and Newhouse is an unhappy back-up in a contract year who's clearly planning on unsigning with a different team, would the Packers be willing to trade him?

Both the Raiders (GM) and Dolphins (Head coach) have some sort of Packers/Newhouse connection and sounds like they both might have a problem at LT position. Clearly they wouldn't be giving a high pick with Newhouse being both a back-up and in his contract year but maybe a late round pick or late mid pick. Though I'm not sure the Packers would go for that. Just interesting to think about.

It would be great to pick up something for our excess talent but I can't see them trading their only viable backup at OT. Now, if the light bulb goes on and Datko really steps up... I don't think Sherrod can make it back before the trade deadline even if he does look ready to play.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?
