ST. LOUIS — Welcome back, Johnny Jolly.

The Green Bay Packers veteran defensive end, who missed the past three seasons — including the team's Super Bowl XLV title — while suspended by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy, has been back with the team since the summer after being reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in March.

But it wasn't until Saturday night's 19-7 preseason victory over the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome that he truly was able to show his old form, deflecting one pass at the line of scrimmage to cause Jarrett Bush's interception, then getting his mitts on a Loyce Means deflection for an interception of his own later in the third quarter.

"It's just a matter of continuing to work hard and get better in everything I do and try my best to stick with the plan the coaches give me," Jolly said afterward. "If I continue to do that, I'll be fine."

There's no question that Jolly has his team in his corner. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke glowingly about how Jolly has reassimiliated himself into the locker-room atmosphere after a short prison stay and suspension, and the excitement on the sideline about Jolly's interception was obvious.

"If you could have a camera on the sideline, I know what I was doing: I was jumping up and down, running down the sideline and I know (wide receiver) James Jones was doing the same thing," Rodgers said. "There were probably 25 guys on the field congratulating him. That just says a lot about his presence, his personality, the way the guys feel about him, how happy we are to have him back and he played great tonight. He had a tip that went for the first interception and then he picked the second one off. So I'm happy he's back and I couldn't be happier for him."

Jolly's deflection on Bush's interception was like turning on a time machine. Jolly's specialty earlier in his career was deflecting passes; in 2009, his last season with the team, he had 11 pass deflections.

"It's pretty much hand-and-eye coordination, reading the quarterback stepping up into the pocket, watching and seeing when he's about to release the ball and the pressure the offensive line is under," Jolly said of backup quarterback Kellen Clemens' throw. "It's all reaction. When the ball comes your direction, get your hands up. And I was able to get it."

If Jolly keeps this up, no way can he be cut. He is a very gifted big man.

I hope he doesn't run out of gas as time goes on. He doesn't appear to be so far as all. Raji looks gassed more often than Jolly when I watch the games.

When Johnny Jolly got that interception. I was thoroughly ecstatic for the man more than the player.

Now don't make an ass of me Johnny - make the team, stay straight, and stay the hell away from Houston. Some of us Packer fans are very proud of you.

There were, still are I am sure, a fair share of people who were thinking that this was another case of a talented thug getting another chance at a big payday simply because he can drag his fat ass around a football field with an amazing amount of agility. However, from what we have heard he has turned his life around. Isn't that what second and even third chances are all about, to allow a guy to get it right. Its a great story in the real world but in the high profile world of professional sports it takes on an all new interest.

Yes, Jolly may have gotten more chances and more support than some regular Joe, maybe even more than some lesser talented football player but should that matter now. Even if Jolly doesn't make another football team if he stays clean he has already won (pause to allow you to wipe away the tears...or roll your eyes)

I do think he makes the team and I think he makes an impact.

dfosterf (27-Aug) : Mecole Hardman to our practice squad
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Nick Nieman from Texans our 5th linebacker. Special teams signing
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Looks like we signed Clayton Tune as QB3
wpr (27-Aug) : TKT people lose their minds over QB3. Point is almost none of them are ready that's why they are on the PS and other teams don't take them.
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Unfortunately he doesn't seem ready to be an emergency QB.
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : As a Canadian and a follower of Canadian University football. I am rooting for him
dfosterf (27-Aug) : I bet a lot of us will follow the Taylor Elgersma journey with interest. Personally, got a Kurt Warner vibe goin' on. I like him
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Not sure if either will be claimed though.
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Tune or Hooker would make sense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Clayton Tune cut by the Cards? Don't know if that's the guy, we shall see
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Per Bill Huber, the Packers will not be bringing back Taylor Elgersma or Sean Clifford on the practice squad, so a new third quarterback
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : Schefter must have deleted his tweet
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Hopefully Jerry reaches under the seat cushions and ashtrays of his jet and scrapes up the 45 million apr and spares us further nonsense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Have to admit the PO'd Cowboy fan videos would be fun to watch. Problem with draft picks is half their fanbase barely knows what that is
beast (27-Aug) : I think Cowboys fans are ready to get their pitch forks and burning sticks if Jerry were to trade Micah
dfosterf (27-Aug) : If Jerry traded Micah to GB, here in northern Va. they would have to quick build yet another data center to handle the internet hate traffic
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : its signing and trades that you don't hear about, other then announced
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : If you hear rumors about Packers sign or trade, won't happen. Not how they work
dfosterf (27-Aug) : 19 players in a contract year. Jones called loss to us worst loss in Cowboy history. Forget Parsons trade. Not happenin' Cap'n
packerfanoutwest (27-Aug) : The Packers, meanwhile, are the youngest team in the league for the third consecutive year.
dfosterf (27-Aug) : That it was darkest before the dawn in Bengals and Commanders before they got deals done
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : what is Schefter saying?
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He was getting Dorito infusion therapy
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He's outta shape. Why, just the other day I saw him splayed out on the trainers table
