Jones suffers ankle sprain, plays only one snap

GREEN BAY — The only bad news — other than the final score, of course — to come out of the Green Bay Packers' 17-0 shutout loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Friday night's preseason opener at Lambeau Field was that first-round draft pick Datone Jones left the game after one play with a sprained left ankle.

"Datone Jones has an ankle sprain. Like a lot of those injuries, I think tomorrow will be a better indicator," coach Mike McCarthy said after the game.

The Packers had 17 players not dress for the game: Wide receivers Kevin Dorsey (hamstring), Charles Johnson (knee) and Randall Cobb (biceps); running backs DuJuan Harris (knee) and Eddie Lacy (hamstring); safety Sean Richardson (neck); cornerback Casey Hayward (hamstring); cornerback Tramon Williams (knee); offensive lineman JC Tretter (ankle); left tackle Bryan Bulaga (knee); offensive lineman Andrew Datko (concussion); tackle Derek Sherrod (leg); tight end Andrew Quarless (quadriceps); tight end Ryan Taylor (knee); wide receiver Jordy Nelson (knee); and defensive end Jerel Worthy (knee).

Jones, a rookie out of UCLA, lined up next to B.J. Raji in the Packers' sub package as an inside rusher when he was in the game.

Mark Lovat and his staff should be fired - actually, this should have happened last year after the season. We ARE SOFT. Sickening.

I hope Datone's sprain is minor, and that he returns soon.

I sure hope an ankle sprain which might take a week to recover from isn't the tipping point for people calling for heads.

I wonder if because these are bigger guys and there is more weight to carry, that it takes longer to heal. When I first heard it though I assumed it would only be a week. Hope we're right.

Or, maybe an idiotic drill that breaks another OL's leg, then another top pick going down for the season, and what, 14 players unable to practice last Wednesday? 7 players on the PUP, all before our first preseason game, in a year when strength & conditioning, and the overall health of their players were to be a major point of emphasis? Because it has been an ongoing problem for the last 3 seasons or more?
