GREEN BAY — While the better news would have been that Datone Jones was back at practice Monday and showing no ill effects from the ankle injury that knocked him out of his first NFL preseason game after one play, the Green Bay Packers will take the news they got on their first-round pick: He's going to be OK.
While Jones did not practice Monday, he was standing on the sideline watching for much of the closed-to-the-public session. And coach Mike McCarthy isn't even ruling him out from Saturday night's second preseason game, at St. Louis.
"Datone Jones, he'll miss a couple of days this week," McCarthy replied when the first question of his post-practice press briefing was about Jones. "I don't have a good handle on if he'll be available for St. Louis."
Jones was injured on his first snap, when he lined up next to B.J. Raji in the sub package and tripped over Arizona guard Jonathan Cooper on a pass rush. The TV broadcast later showed Jones having his ankle and foot re-taped, but he never returned to the game. McCarthy did not have an update on Jones when he met with reporters the following day.
