With Ryan Braun suspended for the balance of the baseball season, all eyes are on A-Rod. And not just Alex Rodriguez.  From the NFL's perspective, folks will be interested in seeing whether Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has anything to say about the situation.  After all, the Packers quarterback responded aggressively in 2012, when Braun avoided...

Major League Baseball has suspended Brewers leftfielder Ryan Braun without pay for the remainder of the 2013 season and he has accepted the penalty, meaning he was caught red-handed either buying and/or using performance-enhancing drugs.

The suspension takes place immediately, so Braun will be suspended for the final 65 games of the season, beginning with the Brewers' game Monday night at Miller Park against San Diego. The sanction came as a result of MLB's investigation into the infamous Biogenesis clinic, which was exposed as having sold PEDs to players after documents were released to various news agencies earlier this year.

The suspension also exposed Braun as a liar because he has stated many times that he never used PEDs and never wavered from that stance. He recently told reporters, "The truth hasn't changed," referring to ongoing speculation that he would be suspended for PED use.

But Braun issued this statement about his suspension: “As I have acknowledged in the past, I am not perfect. I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions. This situation has taken a toll on me and my entire family, and it is has been a distraction to my teammates and the Brewers organization. I am very grateful for the support I have received from players, ownership and the fans in Milwaukee and around the country. Finally, I wish to apologize to anyone I may have disappointed – all of the baseball fans especially those in Milwaukee, the great Brewers organization, and my teammates. I am glad to have this matter behind me once and for all, and I cannot wait to get back to the game I love.”

“We commend Ryan Braun for taking responsibility for his past actions,” said Rob Manfred, Executive Vice President, Economics & League Affairs for Major League Baseball. “We all agree that it is in the best interests of the game to resolve this matter. When Ryan returns, we look forward to him making positive contributions to Major League Baseball, both on and off the field.”

And union director Michael Weiner had this statement: "I am deeply gratified to see Ryan taking this bold step. It vindicates the rights of all players under the Joint Drug Program. It is good for the game that Ryan will return soon to continue his great work both on and off the field."

MLB did not announce specifically what violations Braun committed. Instead, it merely stated that he was suspended for the remainder of the season for violating the Joint Drug Agreement in the Basic Agreement, and that he had agreed to it.

the story  is much longer.

I'm reasonably satisfied with this. At first, I was pissed off because apparently he was the only one of the 32 on the list to be suspended. However, this probably gets him off the hook for any further punishment - assuming he doesn't do it and get caught again. All of those 32 players were in line to get 100 game suspensions, and presumably sooner or later others will get theirs also. Braun has been playing hurt and not playing very well for the Brewers anyway this year; They have been doing surprisingly well without him; And very likely, they are so far in a hole that they can't dig out this year anyway. Braun has a very good team-favorable contract. He should be able to start fresh next season and be a star in Milwaukee for a long time.

Rodgers tweeted back in 2012 that he'd bet a year's salary on Braun's innocence.

That tweet sounds expensive, right about now.

I think Rodgers will distance himself from #8 and #8 will be cut or traded before sp 2014. I'd much rather go to Brewer games and watch young kids try their best, than watch a lying cheater make empty promises.

as far as their business venture, simply change the name of the restaurant, and buy #8 out.

Braun apparently did the crime, and now he's doing the time. This season was pretty much lost for him due to injuries, and the Brewers are so far out as to not have much chance anyway. Next year and beyond, however, Ryan Braun should be back, start fresh and healthy, and resume being the face of the franchise and a superstar on the field.

edit - yep here  is a story that confirms it.

It may take years for the Milwaukee Brewers to recover fully from this.

Prince Fielder arrived in the majors in 2005, Braun followed two years later, and soon afterward it became clear that the Brewers could reasonably afford to retain only one of the superstars on a long-term contract. That’s the reality of doing business in the majors’ second-smallest television market, according to Nielsen.

The Brewers chose Braun, signing him to multiyear deals totaling $150 million. He’s under contract through at least 2020. It’s almost unfathomable that the Brewers would be able to trade him this winter. Releasing him is even less plausible, because the money is guaranteed.

dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.

dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
