In his first regular season game, Mason Crosby converted all three field goals he attempted, including a 53-yarder and a 42-yard kick with two seconds left on the clock to help the Packers defeat the visiting Philadelphia Eagles.

The kick was the first game-winner by a rookie on opening weekend since 1979 (when Matt Bahr achieved the same feat).

Crosby was the first player in NFL history to kick a 50-yard field goal and a game-winning field goal with under a minute remaining in his NFL debut.

Crosby was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week (the first rookie kicker to receive this honor on opening weekend).

Crosby holds some big records in GB. He's done some great things for us, but I believe they've been limited successes.

In 6 seasons he has only made more than 80% of his FGs once, in 2011. In those same 6 seasons, he has made more that 50% of his FGs over 50 yds only once, on 2007. Last season he was 2-9 over 50 yds.

In looking at this I'm not calling for a change, but I could see quite easily how they might make one.

I think the lack of touchbacks on kickoffs is because that is what the coaches are telling him to do ... as in land the ball inside the five yard line so they can pin them before the 20 or cause a turnover. There is no question about it that Mason Crosby can boot it out the back of the endzone.

I wonder if we've been living in some kind of Green & Gold bubble regarding our expectations from the K position, happy with the guy we've had for 6 years?

28 Kickers made over 80% of their FGs last year. Crosby's only done that once in 6 seasons. 9 Kickers made 100% of their FGs from 50+ yds last year. One went 10-10, another 7-7.

Looking at this, it is hard to imagine that we cannot do better at the K position.

I'll add, I'm one of those Mason Crosby fans. I like him. I want him to succeed with the Packers, but I'm not feeling really good about his chances right now.

Seriously, I think for a lot of people its more of a case that we can't believe he is not better. I think a lot of people are surprised by the stats. The Packers are a good team and a winning team, good teams and winning teams don't have bad kickers. It just doesn't happen and when shown the proof (the stats) people just say "oh, I had no idea"

I also think a lot of the reason they stuck with Crosby was answered in 2 separate posts by Play2win "In 6 seasons he has only made more than 80% of his FGs once, in 2011." and "one year after booting 86% and 49 TBs." 2011 was a great year by Crosby, do you look at it as a fluke and dump him when he struggles or do you stick with him and hope he regains his 2011 form. I don't know if anyone expected a repeat of 2011 but I also don't think anyone expected the meltdown that occurred either.

I have no idea how the kicking game will shake out in camp and during the preseason. If the coaches decide someone else is the guy I'm fine with it and if Crosby outperforms the others and they stick with him I'm OK with that as well. I do believe that if he does come back he won't have the luxury of 2011 to fall back on if he falters.

I'm like most have said in regards to all aspects, I like Crosby. But the bottom line is he has to get the job done. And job 1 is making field goals.

Maybe they should do like the 3 point in basketball. Over 50-4 points, over 60-5 points, over 70-6 points, etc. This would help the accuracy challenged who have a strong leg to help offset misses. 🙄

I don't think they want to make kickers MORE significant. It is more likely they would go the other direction - 1 point for under 20, 2 points for 20 - 39, and 3 points for 40 and up. that would encourage teams to go for it more in the red zone - arguably making the game more exciting.

I got injured at work. Blew out my left knee.

The orthopedic surgeon I saw yesterday is Dr. Tim Ackerman. I read his bio prior to going to the appointment. In his bio it said that he is a former Orthopedic surgeon for the Philadelphia Eagles...

... So we're chattin', and I jokingly say, "You aren't going to hold it against me that I'm a life-long Green Bay Packer fan, especially when you go to cuttin'..."

He says, "I'm a Green Bay Packer fan, and so is my entire family. As a matter of fact, I'll bet my sister is a bigger fan of the Packers than you are."

I say, "Oh ya, what does she do, go to all the games in Wisconsin, or something?"

Doc says, "Yes, as a matter of fact she does. She's married to Mason Crosby."

Oh, snap. I'm in good hands in the hinterlands of Harrisburg, PA 😛 👍
