We hear the same thing EVERY year.

This year, he MIGHT break out!

Last year he sucked shit, until Aaron started meeting with him the night before games, to teach him the offensive game plan. And perhaps to keep him from partying the night before. Voila! Suddenly he started to look a little better on Sundays.

Still wasn't great, but he looked good.

Jimmy Graham (15) had more drops than Jermichael Finley (9) last season.

The Finley hate is absurd ...

I don't hate Finley... more like I love Graham potential 💓 and wanted the Packers to draft him very badly that year.

And it would take a guy like Finley to get him in a trade.

Also using those drop numbers and their catch numbers

Finley's drop % last year was 12.857%

Graham drop % last year was 13.636%

Finley dropped a smaller % (barely) but Graham had 34 more catches and 315 more yards.

Again it's not hate for Finley (other than his price tag).

Something for the Jermichael Finley hatahs...

For one, there were no brash pronouncements. His answers during a Q&A session at his locker with reporters were brief. And when the topic of his weight was broached, he didn’t want to discuss it, even though coach Mike McCarthy had just praised him for it moments earlier.

“I think Jermichael looks excellent. He’s put weight back on. He’s back where I like to see him, the playing weight that he’s playing with, and he’s stronger, he’s playing with more confidence,” McCarthy gushed after practice. “I thought he was excellent in the 2-minute drill today. I really like the offseason that Jermichael has put together so far.”

Finley, who’s officially listed at 6-foot-5 and 247 pounds, shrugged off the praise, pointing out that it’s only June.

“It's only minicamp right now. I like to hear that from him, but it's minicamp,” Finley said of McCarthy’s comments. “I feel good, man. That's all I can say. I put on some weight, I'm moving well and I appreciate Coach for the confidence.

“I look back to the 2009 and 2010 seasons and saw that I was playing well, moving well and my hand strength was pretty strong. I wasn't focused on it, but I felt good at it, so why not move up (on the scale)? I feel strong right now, healthy. I feel confident. I'm just excited.”

Finley caught 70% of his targets for 7.67 yards per target.

Graham caught 63% of his for 7.27 yards per target.

Per target, Finley was more productive. Football outsiders has him ranked higher than Graham in DVOA. Which is their ranking on productivity per target.

Also Brees had a bad year (and I think most here might argue Rodgers is better even if Brees wasn't having an off year).

Drop vs. Catch ratings are better (where Finley still has a smaller drop 😵.

Much like a QB whose rating can be affected by YAC, the QB can also get the ball to the WR in stride and leading to open field instead of making him dive for catches or leading him into coverage. A better QB will give his WRs more opportunity for YAC.

A WR can also make it easier for a QB by getting open more, running better routes, being more predictable to the QB, fighting for contested balls and digging bad throws out of the dirt. On top of not dropping the ball.

Any time you are talking about passing, you are going to have a dependent relationship.

But the main point is that totals are very misleading. Teams may target a player more because of a lack of alternatives. Not because they are good.

Having more opportunities doesn't mean they did better with their opportunities. They can get more total catches being average if they are targeted enough to make up for the lack of ability.

For example, Brandon Marshall was targeted 192 times. He was probably about the 40th most productive WR per target. He just made up for his mediocrity with having twice the opportunities of James Jones, but put up fewer TDs.
