James Campen has seen the change in Evan Dietrich-Smith.
A year ago, the Green Bay Packers and their offensive line coach were high on the 6-foot-2, 308-pound center, but not enough to simply hand him a spot in the starting lineup.
So the team went out and signed 36-year-old veteran Jeff Saturday. Saturday’s popularity propelled him to his sixth and final Pro Bowl appearance, but wore down as the season went along, especially in the run game.
It resulted in the 26-year-old Dietrich-Smith supplanting him in the starting lineup near the end of last season and not looking back.
....
“Like last year, the steps he’s made from a professional standpoint are coming to the front for him: leadership, energy, very smart, understands everything,” Campen said. “Just the fact that he’s taken a professional attitude toward everything, it’s obviously helped him a ton.”
