James Campen has seen the change in Evan Dietrich-Smith.

A year ago, the Green Bay Packers and their offensive line coach were high on the 6-foot-2, 308-pound center, but not enough to simply hand him a spot in the starting lineup.

So the team went out and signed 36-year-old veteran Jeff Saturday. Saturday’s popularity propelled him to his sixth and final Pro Bowl appearance, but wore down as the season went along, especially in the run game.

It resulted in the 26-year-old Dietrich-Smith supplanting him in the starting lineup near the end of last season and not looking back.

....

“Like last year, the steps he’s made from a professional standpoint are coming to the front for him: leadership, energy, very smart, understands everything,” Campen said. “Just the fact that he’s taken a professional attitude toward everything, it’s obviously helped him a ton.”

Pre-preseason puff piece.

I bet Patrick Lewis beats him out. EDS is a great backup.

Also on a side note, MM said Lang can play Center... I want to see that.

I also think Barclay is prefect for RG if someone else can step up and answer the call at RT.

Though it sounds like as of right now the Packers have penned in LT Bulaga and LG Sitton and penciled in C Dietrich-Smith and RG Lang. With RT being a free for all at the moment.

Lewis should make the team if he isn't a total nothing because of the Tretter injury. However, EDS IS the center. I think Lang stays at RG, and I'd be surprised if Barclay ends up starting - barring some injuries.

Patrick Lewis entered into the equation simply makes C a camp battle for EDS. I thought EDS played well last season at C, but Lewis is a pure C with exceptional pass blocking ability and what I believe to be better than average run blocking ability.

Texas A&M had quite a few designed runs for their QB, Johnny Football. This kid CAN run block. Lewis was a great signing by Ted, and will make the starting C battle legit between EDS and Lewis. Great competition at the C position this year, and may the best man win.

While it is obvious they like EDS, there is a real chance he gets beat with the addition of Lewis, a pure SEC C with great size and ability.

EDS has been named the starter.

Which means he will receive the majority of the reps at TC.

There is no camp battle!!!

That leaves RT up for grabs, and I for one hope Mike names A STARTER at that position asap.
I really don't care who they name, plenty of talent to choose from, just pick one and plug him in.

Put your 5 guys out there, let them work together.

O-lines just don't magically happen, you can have all the talent in the world, but if the 5 guys upfront don't work together it won't matter.

Lewis hopefully turns into an NFL caliber C, that only means more depth.

edit: changed LT to RT
