In addition to his pass defense skills, didn't Shields improve his play vs the run last year after a lot of heat on our CBs for being afraid to tackle?

Don't forget he played WR until his senior year in college. He was looked at as a project when we picked up up as an UDFA. The things a DB does that a WR doesn't do--tackling, etc--are the things I'd expect him to be weakest at. As he gets more coaching/practice/experience at DB he should continue to improve in those areas.

I would agree he is underpaid relative to his performance over the second half of last season. However how quick we are to forget how badly he got torched the year before. I dont like giving guys big deals after 1 year of solid production. If he wants a big long term deal go out and play like you did last season and I'm all for giving you the dough! If you put together even half a season like you did last year dish out a extension mid season and all parties are happy!

I am surprised that he is letting his agent lead down this path. I am hopeful that he will show up for the mandatory stuff.
Ted Thompson has a reputation of rewarding his players. Shields needs to show up and show the coaches and team that he can continue to play as well as he did at the end of the season and Ted Thompson will pay him.

He's essentially been a starter for 3 years and made pennies compared to other starters around the league. He was huge in 2010, the whole D struggled in 2011 but he was the best DB on the team and he came back and had another huge year last year. He hasn't even missed anything mandatory yet. This article was way way off base. It's much too early in the process to make a scathing article on the guy calling him greedy and such.

Shields should be payed, I think we all agree to that... the question is simply how much? How much is he asking for (per year average wise) and how much the Packers are willing to pay.

I hope he's not looking at Williams contract, because they paid Williams that because he was looking great as a shut down CB at the time. I'm not sure any of the DBs should be making quite that amount Williams has for his last two years (not even Williams).

When it gets to the business side the GM has to draw a line in the sand when it comes to dealing with these issues. I don't see Ted rolling over for a player missing OTA's. So it's not all about what Shields deserves but more how Ted handles agents who want to force the issue.

Ted has always shown that a deserving player will get taken care of but he also has to send a clear message on how he deals with agents and players that make demands before he's ready.

He has to otherwise there will be a line at his door every year. It will be interesting to see how Shields agent deals with it when they get to the mandatory's and there's money to be lost.

My guess is Shields will show up, albeit pissed off, and shortly after Ted gives him a nice raise and everybody walks away with what they wanted.

the whole sheilds thing to me is like offer him 2.5mil to 4 mil a year . if he and his agent refuse let him sit out a year and let them see his worth then. anything over 4 mil is crazy. i know what he has done but we really can not afford anything more than that unless we are ready to cut ties with more important people on the team. we didnt give jennings 8 mil why would we give sheilds big money. the best thing about the packers is our draft and develop . i myself think hayward can do the job maybe even better if he is kept in the game. but this is just my thoughts

I'd feel much better if he had a different agent.
