Haven't seen any tape on him but the kid hasn't started many games at Ole Miss. I don't know if his weight is a problem or not but it looks like he doesn't Carrie it well. Hope I'm wrong and proves to be maybe a solid backup to Raji.

This might be on the board someplace.. but should also be in this thread.

While the start of Thursday’s NFL draft represents the continuation of many players’ careers, it marks the end of even more.

Only 253 players will be drafted, forcing many to continue life without football.

NFL prospect Gilbert Pena already knows that feeling. At the age of 18 the Yonkers’ resident chose family over football.

Pena walked away from the game for four years to work full-time to help his mother, Susan Cruz, who had thyroid cancer.

“It showed me the mature part of life and growing up and being an adult,” said Pena, 26, of his time away from football. “I feel like it helped me. I’m a lot more mature than a guy that just graduated college.”

Pena, a 6-foot-4 317-pound defensive tackle at Mississippi, who is projected to go in the seventh round or as a preferred free agent, worked as a cook and a manager of a plumbing and heating supply warehouse.

Despite earning all-section honors and receiving recruiting letters as a senior at Saunders, Pena’s top priority was his mother’s health.

“Me staying and helping my mom out was my number one concern,” Pena said. “I was like, hey if (football) happens it happens. I knew that I needed my mom in my life.”

In the fall of 2009, with the improvement of his mother’s health, Pena enrolled at ASA junior college in Brooklyn and joined the football team. It was there coach Dennis Orlando convinced Pena his size and talent meant he could potentially play in the NFL.

More after the jump.

Lighter, faster Gilbert Pena ready for big year with Ole Miss football team

By Ron Higgins

Monday, August 13, 2012

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss senior defensive tackle Gilbert Pena's formula for earning increased playing time this football season sounds confusing, but it isn't.

The less you see of him, the more you'll see of him.

Measuring 6-2, 320 pounds, Pena still isn't exactly a world-class ballerina. But considering he's dropped 20 pounds from the time he stepped on campus in January 2011 as a junior college transfer, Pena suddenly has newfound quickness and energy that he is putting to effective use in the Rebels' preseason work.

"He's shown up ready to play almost every practice," coach Hugh Freeze said of Pena, who has consistently drawn double-team blocking in early practices. "He's trimmed down and definitely has a quicker twitch and more explosion."

It's all because Pena discovered you can actually eat lettuce separate from sticking it on a triple-stack hamburger.

"I definitely feel like I'm getting off the line faster and getting to the ball faster," said Pena, who had 11 tackles in 10 games last season after the Yonkers, N.Y., native transferred to Ole Miss from ASA College in Brooklyn. "I can take a lot more reps. Last year at this time, I was having trouble."

Pena's weight woes last season were self-induced, but more from his lack of understanding what is required to survive and thrive in the Southeastern Conference.

When Pena finished his 2010 junior college season as a first-team Northeast All-Conference selection, he weighed 315 pounds. Because he never watched much college football on TV — "That sounds crazy since I play football but that's the truth," Pena said — he naively assumed he needed to gain weight before he reported to any of the major colleges recruiting him.

So in the one-month period from the time Pena's JC season ended, to the moment he reported to Ole Miss, he gained 25 pounds after being wined and dined on recruiting visits.

Between reading the second link about the weight loss and watching the video, I can only imagine how much better he would have been with weight and strength conditioning at a four year school. Jolly and Wilson better be ready to go come training camp with this guy and Boyd.

Mucky Tundra (26m) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (26m) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (27m) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (45m) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him
beast (18-Dec) : $100 million fully guaranteed Kirk Cousins gets benched for rookie
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : a lower case b
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Dan Campbell on onside kick with 12 minutes left: In hindsight, wish I didn’t do that
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : They have that whole 12th man thing so ...
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Of the times we've played there, I just can't recall hearing our fans.
wpr (16-Dec) : Well done jdlax. Well done.
wpr (16-Dec) : I think more likely to be Pack fans that live in the area.
