If Mike McCarthy is fired at the end of next season, it won't be because of injuries, it won't be because of turnovers, it won't be because of missed field goals. It will be because he plays not to lose.

Game after game, McCarthy tries to run out the clock and kick a field goal, instead of letting the best red-zone QB in the league toss one into the end zone. The only handoff I remember on third and long was on a third and 19, when the crowd was really into it and something bad was very likely to happen if the Packers had tried to pick up the first down. That happens sometimes.

I'm up in the air about how McCarthy managed that last drive. When we got the ball, my feeling was that we needed a TD, not a field goal. Be aggressive. Your kicker already botched one earlier in the game. But the three handoffs were pretty standard NFL practice in that situation. The Bears did the exact same thing in the exact same position in OT, but their kicker made the damn thing--kicked it nice and high right down the middle. Crosby kicked a worm-burner.

The bright side is it's almost over. Now I hope the Bears get in the playoffs, keep the Vikings winless in the NFC North.

ALL OTHER NFL COACHES WOULD PLAY IT SAFE. Lovie did the exact same thing, he game it Forte, and Forte worked his magic and got them closer to FG range. Then Gould hit the winning FG in OT.

McCarthy just did what any coach in the NFL would do in the same situation, you can't blame him for that IMO.

Maybe he's intending to show an arrogant sort of confidence in his defense, but he just looks like the timid kid who's so afraid saying the wrong thing that he never says anything. It's irksome.
