I knew Don Hutson played defense, but didn't know he was that talented. From Wiki "On defense, Hutson was a very good safety who intercepted 30 passes over the final six years of his career. Hutson's highest season total was in 1943, when he intercepted eight passes in only 10 games. In 1940, he led the NFL with 6 interceptions."

Could one imagine just how big of a star off the field Hudson (assuming his talents translated into today's game) would have been with the numbers he put up.

I can't speak to Hutson since I only know the stats. My guess is that if I had more info, though, he'd compete for #1.

I think part of the reason I was never as impressed as most are with Butler, Collins, and, especially, Sharper, is that I did get to see Willie Wood play.

To me it isn't even close. It's like the difference between Jerry Rice and Dwight Clark. Or between Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith. Or between Ray Nitschke and Jim Carter [who IMO was underrated]. Or Butkus and Urlacher. Or Herb Adderley and Deion Sanders.

Willie Wood.
