The NFL will start hiring and training possible replacement officials with a deal not yet completed with the NFL Referees Association.

Talks between the league and the officials broke down after two mediation sessions that followed nine bargaining negotiations since October. Both sides have said they expect a new collective bargaining agreement in time for the upcoming season.

But that optimism has disappeared.

A session was held Sunday under the auspices of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and the NFLRA said the league "terminated negotiations" on Monday.

The NFL said new demands made by the officials led to the end of talks.

"In yesterday's session, the NFLRA ... abandoned positions that it had previously taken with both us and the mediators, and made economic demands totaling millions of additional dollars that they had agreed to drop at earlier sessions," league spokesman Greg Aiello said.

The league said that regional training sessions for replacement officials would begin this month "to ensure that there is no disruption to NFL games this season."

"Our goal is to maintain the highest quality of officiating for our teams, players, and fans, including proper enforcement of the playing rules and efficient management of our games," the league said in a statement.

The league will look to hire officials from anywhere but the BCS conferences because those officials are run by NFL officials, and the NFL doesn't want to put the BCS officials in an awkward situation.

The NFL's search would instead target retired college officials and perhaps current ones who would be qualified to work professional games.

Referees counsel Mike Arnold called those replacements "amateur referees."

Just because current NFL referees have been paid doesn't mean their professional-quality. IMO about half of them should be replaced.

Including some of the ones with the most seniority and biggest guns.

The distance between the top ten percent of college referees and the bottom 90 percent of NFL referees is a lot smaller than the NFL refs think.

And I think the NFL knows it.

And sorry, union friends, the NFL isn't Wisconsin. The Gang of 31+ isn't going to recall Goodell for this.

Maybe the NFL should just have one or two referee's on the field and let a couple pinheads in the booth determine plays. Greed wins out!!

plus one-point-five for effective use of the word "pinhead."

"The officials have enjoyed defined-benefit pension plan, and the league has been seeking, in these negotiations, to terminate that plan and switch the NFLRA over to a 401(k)"

Just saw somewhere that Mortenson is reporting that the NFL and the NFLRA are finishing a deal that would get the regular refs back to work as soon as this weekend. Of course, only when the Packers get screwed over is when they actually start getting progress. You guys and the NFL are a bunch of pussies.

Interesting that even a bitter Vikings fan acknowledges the Packers were screwed.

dfosterf (2h) : I think it would be great to have someone like Tom Grossi or Andy Herman on the Board of Directors so he/they could inform us
dfosterf (3h) : Fair enough, WPR. Thing is, I have been a long time advocate to at least have some inkling of the dynamics within the board.
wpr (13h) : 1st world owners/stockholders problems dfosterf.
Martha Careful (16h) : I would have otherwise admirably served
dfosterf (18h) : Also, no more provision for a write-in candidate, so Martha is off the table at least for this year
dfosterf (18h) : You do have to interpret the boring fine print, but all stockholders all see he is on the ballot
dfosterf (18h) : It also says he is subject to another ballot in 2028. I recall nothing of this nature with Murphy
dfosterf (18h) : Ed Policy is on my ballot subject to me penciling him in as a no.
dfosterf (18h) : I thought it used to be we voted for the whatever they called the 45, and then they voted for the seven, and then they voted for Mark Murphy
dfosterf (18h) : Because I was too lazy to change my address, I haven't voted fot years until this year
dfosterf (18h) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (19h) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (19h) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
Zero2Cool (25-Jun) : Maybe wicked wind chill made it worse?
Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : And then he signs with Cleveland in the offseason
Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : @SharpFootball WR Diontae Johnson just admitted he refused to enter a game in 41° weather last year in Baltimore because he felt “ice cold”
Zero2Cool (24-Jun) : Yawn. Rodgers says he is "pretty sure" this be final season.
Zero2Cool (23-Jun) : PFT claims Packers are having extension talks with Zach Tom, Quay Walker.
Mucky Tundra (20-Jun) : GB-Minnesota 2004 Wild Card game popped up on my YouTube page....UGH
beast (20-Jun) : Hmm 🤔 re-signing Walker before Tom? Sounds highly questionable to me.
Mucky Tundra (19-Jun) : One person on Twitter=cannon law
Zero2Cool (19-Jun) : Well, to ONE person on Tweeter
Zero2Cool (19-Jun) : According to Tweeter
Zero2Cool (19-Jun) : Packers are working on extension for LT Walker they hope to have done before camp

dfosterf (18-Jun) : Or Lions
dfosterf (18-Jun) : Beats the hell out of a Vikings signing
Zero2Cool (18-Jun) : Baltimore Ravens now have signed former Packers CB Jaire Alexander.
dfosterf (14-Jun) : TWO magnificent strikes for touchdowns. Lose the pennstate semigeezer non nfl backup
dfosterf (14-Jun) : There was minicamp Thursday. My man Taylor Engersma threw
dfosterf (11-Jun) : There will be a mini camp practice Thursday.
Zero2Cool (11-Jun) : He's been sporting a ring for a while now. It's probably Madonna.
Martha Careful (10-Jun) : We only do the tea before whoopee, it relaxes me.

Mucky Tundra (10-Jun) : How's the ayahuasca tea he makes, Martha?
Martha Careful (10-Jun) : Turns out he like older women
Martha Careful (10-Jun) : I wasn't supposed to say anything, but yes the word is out and we are happy 😂😂😂
