When comparing, or trying to compare Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, I think it's good to note that Favre was a starter in his 2nd season in the NFL, where as Rodgers had three full seasons to learn from a really good quarterback specialist head coach.

That said, gosh are we LUCKY to have been blessed with Brett Favre for 16 seasons and then followed with Aaron Rodgers.

I think Favre was more exciting to watch, but my heart prefers Rodgers simply because I know when the ball is chucked deep, its going to more likely be caught or dropped than picked off, lol.

I still enjoy watching old clips of Favre because he loved the game like a kid. His excitement was infectious. Rodgers is more of a professional, cerebral if you will when he plays the game.

The only time I disliked Favre was for his late years of going over to the Vikings. I honestly didn't mind when he was forced to the Jets and played there as I followed him closely that season. As much as I disliked what he did (on and off the field...) he will always be my favorite QB of all time because he is the main reason I began following the Packers.

Being from Chicago, it wasn't fun watching the semi-pro team from here play every Sunday. Some Sundays though, I would get lucky and get to watch this team that wore green and yellow with this guy who wore #4. I was easily hooked and as I grew up, my love for the Packers (and Favre of course) grew.

Now, I was able to witness the switch from one great to another. While Favre will always be #1 to me, Rodgers is right there to follow (I can't even put a #2 by his name). It is simply amazing and lucky that us Packers fans get to sit and watch another 10-15 years of great quarterback play.

I could never get involved in the "Favre vs Rodgers, who is a better quarterback" arguments and till this day, I don't get it. Favre gave the Packers the best and most exciting years of football ever and now Rodgers is just doing the same thing for us. They are both great and it will be exciting to see Rodgers career progress through the years, possibly passing up some of Favre's records.

While Rodgers is more of a professional, Zero...I do think he has a little bit of that "loving a game like a kid" in him. Constantly photo bombing Captain pictures, messing with Clay Matthews all the time (one that really stands out is when Clay was mic'd up for a game and Rodgers cam up from behind him and slapped him on the ass real hard *no homo*), and growing out a pedophile-looking, handle bar mustache...and don't forget the belt. 😄

I started disliking Favre a bit a while before he left for the Vikings, although what he did for the team more than made up for it. My specific gripes were that it seemed that he was unwilling or unable to adjust to a new team around him, which was frankly quite bad when it came to defense. Being a gunslinger is a lot more fun when you're wearing body armor. You still need to admire his passion for the game and what he did for the team. I'm not going to get into his leaving and joining the Jets -> Vikings because that discussion's been had 238493 times already.

My feeling is that Favre is a Hall of Famer, and that without him, the Packers would have not escaped the mediocrity of the 70s/80s.

And I think his "streak" makes him a legend.

And I would have taken him in his prime over any quarterback then playing.

So, the subject line is accurate.

I do think Rodgers, if he plays injury-free long enough, will show himself even greater. And, in the end, despite my upset at the way it went down, I'm glad the Packers "moved on" when they did.

But Rodgers hasn't done it yet. One championship plus one incomparable season isn't enough. It merely suggests that he has potential that few do.

Remember Eddie Lee Ivery. IMO, had he not blown out his knees, Ivery might have been the second best RB in NFC North history. IMO he had what it took to exceed Taylor and Sayers (though probably not Sanders).

Heck, remember Sayers himself. IMO had he not blown out his knees, or even had he had the knee-surgery-tech of today available to him, he, not Sanders and not Brown, would have been the greatest RB ever.

But Ivery and Sayers are might-have-beens. Rodgers is still just a might-be.

Favre was.

Brett Favre was a kid on the field. Aaron Rodgers is like a cerebral assassin. Rodgers gets excited, yes, all athletes do (except Johnny Unitas, you couldn't tell if he threw a TD or INT). Favre did the forward flip pass, threw snowballs, tackled his own teammates, etc ... Rodgers does a lot of things that show he has a good sense of humor in his character like the ritual of appearing in the background of the team captain pics, the hair, the facial hair, the belt, the hadouken, etc ...

Rodgers is far more business on the field than Favre and that's not a con or pro to either in my opinion. However, its easier to trust Rodgers passes being caught or incomplete where Favre you assumed it was going to be caught, sadly, sometimes by the wrong jersey which, lets face it, created helluva lot excitement for viewers.

Wade, we almost had a fight there, but I see you have Sanders #1. 🙂

Gale Sayersr wouldn't have been better than Walter Payton, I have enough of both to dispute that.

I have no question the Packers would have escaped mediocrity of the 70's and 80's with or without Brett Favre. I'm basing on that opinion on all the other pieces being in place. Wolf, Holmgren, White, Santana, etc ... Holmgren's staff was really good at developing QB's and the focal point of the passing game was timing an shorter passes. It was more of a QB friendly offensive system.

I am NOT undermining the importance of Brett Favre ... I just feel he needed the system, more than the system needed him.

But, if I recall correctly, Favre there was part of the reason White considered GB seriously in the first place. If he hadn't been?

And how many of the future FAs would have come had White not come?

And Gale Sayers would have been better than Walter Payton.

Let's put an end to the fairy tale of White coming here because of Favre. Reggie went to the highest bidder, period.

You all have said great things about Favre, and because the man has had more sunshine blown up his ass than Rah, we'll leave it at that. His flaw, like just about every big man on campus quarterback, is that he demanded his ass kissed and wouldn't know humility if it came up and bit him on his favorite appendage.

There was a time when a large majority of Packer fans thought Favre could do no wrong. It wasn’t that long ago. Back in ‘06 there was much discussion about the talent around Favre rather than his regressing play.

There was also a time when Packer fans felt Favre would lead the team to multiple championships. This was never in doubt. Then Mike Holmgren left, Reggie White retired, and Bob Harlan gave Mike Sherman the general manager responsibilities.

There’s no telling where Rodgers will go, but Packer fans are once again painting themselves in a corner. The relationship Packer fans have with Rodgers is practically identical to Favre’s relationship with the fans. It’s also Super Bowl or bust every year now, which was the same case from 95-04 with Favre. This won’t last forever, though. The window will close and Rodgers will go through some tough patches. I think it's coming sooner than people think. I don’t know how he’ll respond. I have an idea, but there’s no way to know for sure.

Just enjoy the ride and see what happens. Until then, comparing the two is pointless. We don’t know whether Rodgers is Kurt Warner or Tom Brady yet.

Reggie White said he was going to let God decide where he'd sign. Mike Holmgren called Reggie and left a message on his answering machine/voice mail saying "Reggie, this is God. Come to Green Bay.", of course jokingly.

Reggie did admire Favre because in the season prior to signing with the Packers, Reggie (or some other Eagles player) hit Favre so hard into the ground he dislocated his shoulder ... Favre stayed in and gained Reggie's respect.

It was reported a few times that the Redskins offered more money, but Reggie felt Green Bay was heading in the right direction more so than the Redskins.

I blatantly stated ALL PIECES THE SAME, that means White would have signed with the Packers. [duh] White and a championship opportunity are the only reasons Keith Jackson signed with the Packers, Jackson openly admitted that a time or two, lol.

Holmgren and staff produced a couple decent QB's during the tenure in Green Bay. I believe Mark Brunell was in Green Bay in '93 which I believe was Holmgren/Wolf's 2nd season.

Reggie went where his wife told him to go. And that means, where the money was offered. If the Skins were offering more, it wouldn't have been much, and it would have been offset by the championship opportunity.

Reggie's signing opened the door for black players to come to Green Bay by choice. The Frozen Tundra was long considered to be the Siberia of the NFL, especially for non-whites. Even moreso after the James Lofton fiasco. Reggie changed that to a significant degree. Not only for players of racial minorities, but for players who wanted to win.

As for Favre, I think Big Irv kept him grounded to some degree. Losing his dad was a major blow to Favre, for that reason, if no other.
