It has to do with how many exemptions you claim. Go talk to your payroll clerk and tell her you think you are having too much deducted because you are getting a refund from the IRS on your tax return. Tell her these faceless momolucs you take financial advice from think you should change your W4. Then take her advice.

You should get 1 for you, 1 for each child you get to claim. Where are you getting 6 and how big of a fricken refund check from the IRS are we talking about? If it's less than $500 don't change anything, if it's a grand or more WTF?

Didn't you have to take a finance class in college? If not, you may want to take a night class and maybe bag a babe too.

I had finance in high school and college, and I'm extremely good with numbers. I lack understanding on the stuff I'm asking because I've never taken the time to read up on it.

I've claimed 2 for a few years and the child tax credit deal plus head of house hold alone is over 1k.

Christ said pay your damn taxes. If you want to fight over taxes, you love your money than you love me.

I kind of paraphrased.

That's exactly it. If you have the funds, you can invest it. If the government has them, you can't.

Of course, if you are like me and tend to consume rather than invest, then it's smarter to use withholding as insurance.

For people who are disciplined with their wealth (DakotaT), withholding is either another case of government-as-coercive-thief (if you share my anarchist bent) or another opportunity to ensure the good things of government (if you share DakotaT's government-as-necessary liberalism). For people who are lousy with money (like me) its the price of ensuring we're able to pay our share.

All the dead presidents represent our government.

God doesn't need money to get his work done. If He wants something done, lack of funds won't stop Him. That is what being all powerful means. Anyone telling you He needs your money, wants your money.

Frankly I wouldn't want my tax dollars going to pay someone to chase people down to collect it either. The more people under pay, the more they run out of money and have to waste our tax dollars in collections. Not to mention all the extra work for clerks to handle the paper work and process all the extensions and crap.

There is always a balance. You don't want to get too close to a penalty, but you don't want them holding more than necessary.
