PFW

After taking a pretty big step back in his second season at nickel back, we hear Sam Shields is far from being assured of a roster spot this coming season. The way we hear it, unless Shields greatly improves his tackling skills, which were feeble for the most part last season, and sheds his knack for peeking into the backfield, he could be in trouble with a host of challengers...

It looks like Joe Whitt and Perry have their work cut out for them. Sam Shields has way too much ability to just cut loose. Competition should take care of the problem.

I think Sam Shields played only WR his entire life until the last year of college or something, right? Hell, we see players who have been playing defense their entire life who can't tackle so I think he gets more leniency based on his 2010 season.

He also didn't have a training camp last year to learn the fundamentals. He is fast and for a CB, he has incredible ball skills.

I'm not buying that Shields is on the bubble... the Packers will keep 6 CBs and it will be the same group as last year, Minus Lee and plus Hayward. Shields can't tackle but he's got GREAT quickness and speed. And honestly I wanted to see a Shields vs. Steve Smith match-up last year after Williams was hurt. No offense to Woodson but he no longer has the speed to keep up with the Steve Smith speedy types all game long... I wanted to see if the speedy Shields could cover other very good speedy types.

It will be nice to see if House and Hayward can pass Bush and put some pressure on the top 3 CBs.

Also interesting tidbit the article had, that the Packers will be playing more Dime packages...will have to wait and see if that one is true or not.

Shields is one of the top 6 CB on the team. Uncle Teddy is not going to flush him after one poor season. Look at how long they stuck with Harrell.

The only time how much they make matters is if you have a lot of cap money tied up and cutting him wouldn't save anything. If a player is already paid, keeping him costs nothing extra and you see potential for him to be a better player than what you have, you keep him. It doesn't matter where he was drafted.
