total packers

There must be some big news coming out of the Green Bay Packers‘ first day of mandatory minicamp, right? Not really, but we did take note of one thing passed on by Jeff Ash.

Jarrett Bush was working with the Packers starting base defense ahead of Sam Shields. Tramon Williams was on the other side and Charles Woodson worked in the slot.

Shields, who had a pretty terrible 2011 season, appears to be sliding down the depth chart. That, or the coaches are sending a message that he better get his shit together if he wants to see the field at all.

Let’s consider the position for a minute.

The starters are set with Williams and Woodson. The Packers re-signed Bush, who was a free agent, in the offseason — a clear vote of confidence for a player who has steadily improved. Then they drafted Casey Hayward in the second round of the draft. Meanwhile, Davon House has been getting praise all offseason for making the good old second-year jump.

The second-year jump is something Shields didn’t make last season. After performing admirably as a rookie, Shields took a major step back in 2011. He gambled too much and often paid for it.

So where is he on the depth chart now? Fourth? Fifth? Maybe even sixth?

It’s too early to tell. He’s probably still ahead of Hayward and House because of experience, but there’s no guarantee that will last.

If you’re counting, we’ve mentioned six cornerbacks. The Packers kept six corners last season. Substitute second-round bust Pat Lee for Hayward and you have the group.

Lee and House were fifth and sixth in the group and didn’t really get on the field other than on special teams. If he doesn’t turn things around, a guy who once looked like a future star may find himself in that position this season.

If things get worse, Shields may find himself off the roster entirely.

I expect Sam to bounce back. It came so easily to him his rookie season he figured he could gamble more and more because of his speed. He learned.

Ha ha, they're just sending him a message. No way Bush starts over him.

If it was Heyward or House in front of him, I'd view that as a threat. But this is just sending him a message plain and clear.

And IMO he did NOT have a "horrible" year. Dude just needs to get down with his tackling. That's fine. He will now have had an offseason in the system.

Cut Bush.

He's a friggin' liability, damn near every play.

I hate that guy in coverage. He couldn't cover a friggin' sunrise if he was a rooster.

Hate, hate hate.

Sorry , I can't find my green and gold goggles.

Sam Shields gets this year to prove himself, imo Call it a bonus for his rookie seasn and his obvious potential.

Sam= potential=one more year, that is it.

Bush shouldn't do anything but be our special teams ace. I hate his ass on defense too. I'd like to see House get the nod to be perfectly honest. He's bigger and stronger, and hopefully he doesn't tackle like a pussy like Shields.

You can take the easy way out and blame Deion Sanders, but bottom line the blame lies with endorsement deals. How many endorsement deals do you see with a guy on crutches or in a sling or black eye or something else that could happen from tackling?

Funny thing about Deion Sanders. He once stated he could tackle, but chose not to because he didn't like his jersey getting dirty. I say okay, fine, but explain your time with the Falcons and Cowboys when you played on turf.

Zero2Cool (3h) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (6h) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (6h) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (8h) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (8h) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (8h) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (8h) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (8h) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (8h) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (8h) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (8h) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (8h) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (8h) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (8h) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (8h) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (9h) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (10h) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (10h) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (10h) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Will there be a tracker on the ball or something?
