When Merling was a high draft pick, he now says, he became complacent knowing that he was going to make the team. In Green Bay, Merling has no such assurances, and he says that’s going to make him push himself.

I think this is a good dude to whom to offer a shot at redemption. I heard he showed up out of shape though, which has apparently been his main problem from what I understand.

Funny how the field is actually starting to look crowded on our DL. He's going to really have to show well to make it, and I hope he does. Wilson and WInn have got to be feeling the pressure to deliver. Ted and his staff look to have done well to create some good competition at a position where we sorely needed it.

When he was in the draft, I thought he had a lot of potential and he flashed and disappeared at times in his first two years, then injuries/not coming back from injuries hurt his 3rd and 4th years. I think he has more potential than say Wilson, but I'm not sure if he'll be able to get that potential out and turn it into talent. Also he needs to stay out of trouble off the field...

That said, I do like these moves. They're picking up a bunch of solid guys who, most at least, have some potential to still make a jump forward.

At worst, we're getting some decent depth at a position of need. At best, one of these signings goes on a hot streak or finally reaches his full potential.

Merling is right in line with that group.

This could be a good pick up, if he gets his head on straight. He certainly has great size for the position. He needs to get committed to developing and using his talent. That's most likely "iffy" at best, but who knows... It will be interesting to see if he comes into training camp in shape, ready to compete. If he doesn't he'll be gone pretty quickly IMO.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?

Again.. guy is down to his last chance in the show.. he either grabs a hold of it or "Turn out the lights.. the party is over ".

He really has little choice but to accept his past and learn from it.

If he helps that Packers.. great, but honestly I hope the cat has figured it out for himself as a human being.
