Forget panic. There's been barely any effort, period, to upgrade the running back position this off-season.

Ted Thompson didn't draft a back. He hasn't shown any urgency in re-signing Ryan Grant. And despite a full bin of bargains in free agency, the Green Bay Packer general manager simply added a couple undrafted players. Yawn . . .

Following a season in which Aaron Rodgers and the Packer passing game lit up defenses - and malfunctioned when it mattered most - management hasn't flinched.

And why would they? This is how the team should do business.

It's impossible to pay everyone. If Thompson is going to lowball a position, it should be the position that's most disposable. A position that requires smart, healthy players. Not stars.

In Green Bay, that's the running back. They're supporting actors, more Tom Hagen than Michael Corleone.

The combination of James Starks, Alex Green, Brandon Saine and John Kuhn can suffice.

Those undrafted guys have potential. But I honestly don't think we need an upgrade at RB.

As for Grant, his agent dug his grave when he piled on the Favre fiasco to get the last contract. Hope it was worth it.

Depending on the weather.... Might need a running game on Dec 16th.

Other then that... I have no worries.

Green Bay wins the Superbowl 34-31 over Raiders in a Naw Leans classic that is decided in the last 32.5 seconds.

I don't mind what the Packers are doing with the RB position. In the end, its not like the threat of our RBs these past two seasons has helped set up our passing attack. Starks, Green and Saine will be just fine back there as they all play a little different role.

This will allow the Packers to keep the guys that actually matter, like Jennings.

I find it humorous.. we had needs across the board on defense this offseason.. some immediate, so now in the writers eyes looking for a story.. something to write about, it is about time to throw out there that we can little about the running game because we didn't drop a pick on a back.

Or that we didn't hit the FA market.. really, who on the free agent market is going anywhere before training camp or later?

Simply put.. the Packer have a couple years invested in Starks now as the lead back so to speak.. they spent a mid rounder on Green last season.. and Saine has shown that he can hold his own in the backfield.. IMO, will develop into a gem of a pass blocker from that spot. Overlooking the kid from USC would be a mistake as well..

The Packers don't need a dominate running game.. they just need enough of a running game to keep the defense (read pressure by timing blitzes and not even pausing for the threat of the run) honest.. if anything they need to develop a short running game to pound in red zone and short yardage situations .

If I could write the perfect gameplan.. it would be pound the rock early, establish the run in the defenses mind.. then shred them with the passing game for the a while.. then balance out the game in playing calling and rip their freaking hearts out.

The all-wheel-drive rushing attack is outdated.

Couldn't agree more.

🇹🇹 knows what's up. Pass rush was our #1 off season priority. Improving the running game's not even in the top 10.

I liked Grant. But if it came between resigning Grant or pretty much any other position, I'd take the other position. DL and OLB were our first priorities. Then OL. We could have used another WR. A QB to compete with Harrell. CB and S definitely. Heck, ILB too. I don't see RB in there for priorities either.

James Starks is going through his first off-season in Green Bay‘s program. He was hurt as a rookie and the lockout was last season. I think he's a tad bit underestimated. He has a chance to be every bit as productive as Grant was, in my opinion. Frankly, I think he offers more upside than Grant.
