Mike McCarthy and Dom Capers both said they need to play more base defense this season, which means more 3 - 4 alignment. I'm guessing that means a healthy dose of Pickett, Raji and Worthy on the DL.

Of course that could change against teams like the Ravens, 49er's, Vikings, Falcons, Jags, Jets. Of course most of those teams have low potency offenses. As long as the Packer's get up a couple scores early they'll start abandoned the run to some extent as well (2010 Falcon's playoff game?).

Overall, I think it just depends on the match up. As a percentage, I'd say we'll be in sub packages > 52% of the time (and that's being conservative). Ultimately it depends on the team and even the specific game circumstances. At least the defense will have more flexibility with greater defensive depth, especially at DL and LB.

One of the reasons we didn't see the base as much as much last year is it forced them to consistently play Wilson and/or Wynn, which left much to be desired. Unless Worthy and Muir come through, with the 2 suspensions, we may not see it a lot early on again. Of course, if Wilson and/or Wynn have breakout seasons, we can do what we want.

I think this is the defensive alignment we'll see the Packers in more often than any other this season.
• Raji
  • Pickett

  • Matthews III
  • Hawk
  • Bishop
  • Perry

  • Hayward
  • Woodson
  • Burnett
  • McMillian
  • Williams
Caper.......doesn't seem interested in running any type of hybrid 3-4/4-3 system.

And when they want to run a 4-3, like they did against the Eagles in the playoffs, they just move Woodson to a LB type position, which they had him at to help chase down Vick.

As you said, there's really little difference in the nickle packages for DE's other than stance and therefore technique. If someone like Perry is clearly better rushing with his hand in the ground, let him do it sometimes.

I think the reason they didn't/don't is because at times the OLB in 2-4 has to drop out into coverage, which can be harder to do with your hand down (but I remember Kampman doing a fine job of it for one play against TE Jason Witten one on one, before Capers came, and they were still playing the 4-3 D.

I think Perry has the physical skills to play in a two or three point stances. I'm more worried about his willingness to get physical and work the bull rush and other physical moves. Because at times he seemed to avoid it too much from what I saw on film. And when he was at his best he was willing to hit the physical moves hard and work off of them, like fake the bull rush and go for a speed rush.

Beast - I like how you have Woodson lining up at LB occasionally. I can see that happening in obvious passing downs. Woodson will take out the TE.

I don't know if it's true but I've read the Packers run the nickel D 2-4 defense more than 70% of the time last year... because the other teams were passing so much trying to keep up with the Packers offense and because the lack of talent on the DL. Normally I think they run nickel about 55 to 60% of the time. But they didn't have the pass rush to stop the passing so teams passed on them more often which raised it.

So Mike McCarthy and Capers could be right, the Packers will be running 3 DL sets more often, but at the same time they could play 2-4 nickel most often.

I'm pretty sure they ran 2-4 nickle around 70% in 2010 as well so I don't think it's just because of the d-line or teams playing catch up. Capers just likes that formation.
