IMO.. I think the Packers should operate in standard protocol this draft. Stock up and fire as many shots at the draft as you can.

Why?

Because of the number of guys with contracts coming up and us already starting to push the cap limit. We should be doing two things with this draft.

One.. rebuilding the depth at a couple key positions. CB, Safety and DL. I like our overall depth at Linebacker as a whole.. just we either need a guy to step up or find a guy the can improve the level of starting play opposite Matthews.

Two.. allow the draft board come to them.. if a guy of interest slides, yes go after him. In that scenario, yes I can see dealing away a couple of shots later. But to just move up blindly in the draft, just because we have an excess of picks to do so, to me, that isn't the route we should take.

First blush at this draft, I think the 1st round talent isn't great overall.. meaning probably not 32 players that would truly grade as a first round talent in comparatively to other years. But I think this draft is loaded with the next tier players.. and IMO, this is where Ted may hunt this year for a couple of solid players to add to the roster.

IMO.. I could see him obtaining multiple picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds to "reload" so to speak ahead of the curve and providing options as some of the next wave of talent comes up for contract.

Whether that is letting guys walk.. or cutting aging or overpaid weight at certain spots where the contract numbers are a bit out of whack. IE.. Having 12 + million tied up into the starters at the MLB position in 2013.

1. I never presumed to know "who" they might like enough to trade up, in any scenario. Simply stated we are in a position to move up, without hurting ourselves too badly. For all we know, none of the first 30 or so warrant such a move, which is fine.

2. Yes, I offered a number of trade up scenarios, even one out of the box-type. I did preface with that one with something like "I know he has never done this before" - its a simple discussion of the "options" available to us this draft.

3. What those guys have to do with it is pretty simple: we let one of the most important pieces of our front 7 walk to Philly, without trying to replace him until late in the 2011 draft, counting on Neal to come back from injury, with no insurance behind him.

4. I posted a link to article describing where the majority of All-Pro players are selected, by position 2007-2011, The jist of that being a very high percentage are selected R1. You like the Giants DL? Well, it's loaded with R1s.

5. Never said anything about trading next year's R1 to package with this year's for a single player. But, I guess that is an option too, if they deem a player to be that important. I generally don't like that idea, but trading 2013 R1 for an additional front 7 defender this year makes sense to me. If it doesn't to you, fine. It's just a discussion. No vitriol needed. I didn't think you comment was "cool," nor necessary.

6. Looking at our top needs for this year, we must add starters at 3 positions: OLB, DE and SS. If those guys are there, we have plenty of options to go and get them. Really simple. Players. Picks. We are loaded to maneuver through this draft a get those players we want. If that means an R1 next year traded for that legit R1 starter candidate this year, I am good with that. It's their call. A possibility that for some reason is causing some gnashing of teeth here. Not understanding why that would be so bad, if it would help us to win another SB.

7. None of us really knows what or who or how we can best get there, but we all want to get there, and this should be fun to talk about those possibilities and options available to our team.

Zero2Cool,

I should add I hope there are no hard feelings. I just wanted to find a forum that didn't involve the nonsense BS beat downs that are found in many others. I like exchanging ideas about what the future holds for our Packers. This is all pure fan speculation. I guess that's where I got a little bent. I respect Ted, and I'm clearly just a fan, like you.

There are no guarantees with any selection. Just hoping we load up - especially on pass rush, to make a more legit run at the Lombardi Trophy in 2012-2013.

I think when we went to their house that year and knocked them out, it got inside their heads. They really thought they had it all wrapped up that year. Not unlike us this year, except we already had a Superbowl win under our belts.

Of course, most of McClellin's damage came as a violent pass rusher off the edge. Of late, McClellin has snuck into the first round of some national mock drafts.

Dating back to the Senior Bowl, the Green Bay Packers have shown "significant interest" in McClellin, per a league source.

Hard working farmboy who can get after the QB. Extremely versatile. This dude is a Ted Thompson kind of guy.

All great points. Just to be clear, I wasn't advocating trading up blindly. I don't know boo about any of these players really, only what I've read and seen on a few videos/games watched. Just that I wouldn't mind if they had the players they really wanted already earmarked, and deemed worthy of that kind of trade up to try to get them. Nearly any combo of players and picks we've talked about to give us a pass rush that they deem appropriate would be welcome news.

I totally agree with you though on them staying where they are and going shotgun. That's a good possibility. The only thing on that is I wouldn't like to hear them say: "we really liked so & so, but team "x" had already taken him," with so many picks/players available to move up for their guy. The other thing is we don't have a ton of openings on the roster, and would have to be prepared to cut the chaff loose. I think they are pretty likely to trade around to land the value they are looking for, whether that be up or down. OLB, DE, SS, C, RB, OT, CB, NT, DT. That's 9 players at positions where we could use upgrades, and we have 12 picks. Shotgun approach could definitely work, staying where we are.

Also, I agree too that it does seem deep in quality in the 30-90 range, but that's just from the reports I've read. Should be interesting to see what they do. Plenty of fire power to trade up in Rs 2 & 3. Hoping like everyone they land their starters, and upgrades from what we put out there last season. Being we were 15-1, seems we can't be that far off.

Bottom line for me is I hope the Packers end up trading up in the first and/or second round. Because that would mean that they're a high level player(s) Ted Thompson really likes. I trust TT's judgement. So we should be getting a player(s) that, chances are, would have an immediate impact.

Although at the time I was in the belief that we paid too high of a price to leap up and grab Matthews, meaning pick A and B for our package of picks to move up x number of slots.. that is the type of pounce I would advocate at this point. And in hindsight of the player Matthews as become at the pro level.. of course my initial reaction to the deal was moot and incorrect. One of millions of times I have been incorrect in life and sports.. and will not be the last, lol.

That is what I mean, let the board come to you.. if there is clearly one player you value that much and he can be obtained without selling out to get him.. go for it. Otherwise.. play the odds and pick value at each pick and let the chips fall.
