Got asked an interesting query this morning, apparently it was brought up and debated shortly at a library meeting this week in a local town. Apparently after a short discussion they tabled it, going to research and revisit at another meeting. But I was asked my opinion..

Should they classify the bible as fiction or non-fiction?

Now I am sure there is an agenda behind the question and why it was brought up.. but thinking it over I stated why not place it as a reference document and avoid the topic.

Apparently that is what started it.. lol... someone apparently has taken exception to that.

Since we have a wide variety of opinions with different backgrounds and areas of knowledge.. I thought I would post the question.

Any thoughts?

I think your title would be better to say ... The Bible, Fiction, or Non-Fiction categorically speaking? lol

Between the two options, I think it should be Fiction, because it can not be proven by any factual documentation.

On a side note, I attended a Catholic church last weekend. I was generally nervous because it felt like a cult. The way everyone repeated certain things the priest said was ... it sound like hundreds of drones. It was freaking creepy as heck. Hardly any smiles and it was as if no one was thinking for themselves ... just repeat whatever the man in the fancy robe says.

And what is up with stand, kneel, sit, kneel, stand, kneel, sit ... holy balls it's church!!!

This is just another attempt at man to remove GOD from everything.

Evolution books are considered "non-fiction", arn't they? Yet there is NO "factual documentation" to back those up.

As far as the Catholic church......i don't want to step on toes, but there are alot of things that are done in that church that the Bible says should not be done. Like for example, all the "repeated" certain things you brought up, the Bible states that in the end times there will be those that will say things over and over, thinking they will be heard for their many words.
There are other things too, but i won't get into that right now.

I can honestly see where that kind of stuff can scare a person.

I honestly believe God cares more about a 10 second prayer from your heart then 30 minutes of "hail Marys".

This is where being a member of a "religion" or being in a relationship with God is totally different.
You don't need to have a priest talk to God for you, HE is here on a "direct line".

Also, I see no issue putting the bible in the Fiction. It will avoid the pissy atheists getting their panties in a bunch, and most religious people will accept that there isn't much to back up the bible as fact (though, what is considered fact in almost everything can be argued...) so it's whatever.

You believe or you don't. Whoever complained about this topic in the first place deserves a punch in the face followed by a "who the fuck cares? shut up."

edit: Cheesey, you said everything I wanted to say but didn't. Thank you, Sir.

GBGUY....i disagree. There is plenty to back up the Bible as a history book.
If you look at the world wide flood, you'd see there is proof that it happened. The "fossil record" shows that.

To just throw out there "isn't much to back up the Bible as fact" is just throwing out an opinion.
What do you base your opinion on? Have you seen proof that the things in the Bible didn't happen?

If you compare it to other books from long ago, you'd see that alot of what the Bible says has been stated in other books, and even other religions other then Christianity.

What is history based on? The writtings of people that were there at the time things happned.

Otherwise, you might as well call ALL history books "fiction".

EDIT: You're welcome GBGUY! LOL!

Neither.

Fiction and non-fiction are both human artifacts.

The Bible is God's Word.

Matthew, Mark, those others -- they were merely amanuenses.

Properly, the question should be "Fiction, Non-fiction, or Truth."

I've been involved in way too religion threads during my time on the internet to know it's no good debating the subject.

My personal preference: put it in fiction.

But another reason I said it is because I believe a lot of the Bible is open to interpretation, some of the things I don't believe were actually meant to be taken as literal history. But more as ways to portray life lessons, or "morals to the story."

Strike that, I am having a hard time putting into words what I mean, so I'll steal a bit from google:

http://www.jewfaq.org/torah.htm
and they are accepted as literal by Christians and Jews.

There are many misconceptions regarding the Bible, and some of the most basic are people who try to apply the things done in the Old Testament to the times we are now living in; Jesus came and made a NEW covenant with us, in which He did not abolish the Law, but rather fulfilled it for us:

Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. "

Yes, i know that some will take it as a personal attack, which is sad.
Debate is good, as well as it doesn't turn into personal attacks.
