Well looks like I may have to sort of recant my position on the backbone of the NFL, albeit they haven't tagged the Saints directly (in between the lines part of the Good ol' Boy Network of owners) as a franchise yet.

Furthermore.. it is even more disappointing the the NFL didn't deal with the Patriots and there way a little harsher.

As expected, Commissioner Roger Goodell  has hit the Saints hard for the bounty system that was employed for three seasons.

Per a league source, Sean Payton has been suspended for the full year.

Gregg Williams has been suspended indefinitely.

Mickey Loomis has been suspended for eight game.

More to come.

I have to wonder what the plan of succession is for the Saints. If Payton can't coach this year, who takes his place? And do the Saints part ways with him entirely or do they bring him back after he has served his suspension?

By the way, there was an article posted here a while back that described Ted Thompson agonizing over the decision of whom to hire as head coach. He emphasized that he wanted a "good man" even more than a football guru. It would appear that he made the right choice, even if the much-coveted Super Bowl did come a year later for Green Bay than it did for New Orleans.

Boom. Now lay some hammers down on Vilma, Hargrove and whoever else was implicated in the bounty system and we're good to go.

Maybe dock their second rounder this year for good measure.

This is definitely a "statement" ruling by Goodell...

Peyton suspended one year, without pay.
Williams suspended indefinitely, at least one year.
Loomis suspended 8 games and fined $500,000.
Joe Vitt suspended 6 games and fined $100,000.
Saints fined $500,000 and 2nd round picks this year and next.

Player rulings on the way...

It always strikes me as laughable to fine a team about the same amount -- or even less -- than the coaches. In the grand scheme of things, half a million is practically pocket change for an NFL franchise. I have always thought the fines should be in the millions to mean anything.

Bah, two 2nd rounders? I say make them pick at the last spot of each round for three consecutive years.

Sean Payton will not be fired or let go. I think Drew Brees is going to financially capitalize on this. If I'm correct, Sean Payton was basically calling the plays on offense? They will now need Drew Brees to have a bigger role in that, right? The Saints did have some time without their head coach when he had his busted leg. So they kind of have a little experience with it.

I know it is spilled milk, but this crackdown (deservedly if they have the evidence to prove intent) illustrates one thing. The Patriots got off cheap for disregarding a notice to cease and continue to garner an unfair advantage upon the field. Burning the tapes by the NFL without disclosing the contents is and has been the smoking gun in the whole deal.

Granted, it doesn't have the same shock effect as the word "bounty", it still was a cheating the integrity of the game. Clump in the basic ignorance of wrongdoing but the Broncos in the salary cap gyrations, albeit that was not on Goodell's watch, the NFL has a bit of an issue upon in hands going forward without some form of favoritism being even more prevalent than already shown.

One has to question the ability of the NFL to hand out penalties to both players, coaches and franchises alike in a fair and unbiased manner.

According to PFT , Payton had expected to hand the reins to Joe Vitt during the 4-game suspension he anticipated coming down the pike. But Vitt himself has been suspended for 6 games, so that plan has to be scuttled. This organization is in disarray at the moment.

Jay Glazer said on NFL Network that he interviewed Payton immediately after the news came down, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s punishment is far more severe than Payton was expecting.

“I did talk to him and he’s stunned to say the least,” Glazer said. “I think the entire team thought maybe there’d be a four-game suspension, but not a year. I said, ‘Are you OK?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not OK.’ He is stunned. He’s going to lose about $8 million. He is beside himself here.”
