Stranded kite surfer fends off sharks with a knife for 2 days in Red Sea

I have to ask- why?

Janek Lisewski, a champion kite surfer, was stranded during an attempt to cross the Red Sea by kite. He survived on energy drinks and used a knife to fight off sharks.

A kite surfer who became stranded during an attempt to cross the Red Sea fought off sharks and endured excruciating thirst, according to Reuters and Polish media.

Janek Lisewski, 42, a kite surfing champion from Poland, was two-thirds of the way through a 124-mile trip between Egypt and Saudi Arabia when the wind died down and deflated his kite. He survived by drinking energy drinks and two energy bars. He used a knife to fend off sharks.

He sent an SOS signal but it took nearly 40 hours for the Saudi Arabian coast guard to find him.

"I was stabbing them in the eyes, the nose and gills," Lisewski told Polish state news agency PAP.

Lisewski crossed the Baltic Sea from Poland to Sweden last year, a similar distance to the Red Sea attempt, according to Kiteworldmag.com.

LOL.. when I read that this morning.. the same thought popped in my head. Why? Why did you even attempt such a thing.

There really isn't a purpose even if successful.

Do you know Poland no longer has ice cubes.

Why? Because it's a challenge he set for himself that's why. I don't think it's any different from trying to climb a mountain.

What a badass this guy is. I wonder just how often sharks came around.

To "do it all by myself without anyone's help" is a little like being a 2 year old. Emergencies to come up. Leg cramp or sail snap or something. Even the best of the best have things go wrong.

1) Piss poor planning on his part to not having a backup plan on a trip apparently set forth only as a goal. Fine.. then properly plan for failure as well.

2) His failure to properly plan his little trip cost someone else dollars in terms of wages, fuel, and other expenses to "rescue" him.

3) Then he sounds all heroic in fending off predators and surviving the ordeal.

Seriously, to me, it isn't condescending at all to ask why.. if nothing else it is condescending to set off on a personal goal setting trip and expecting others to save him if he wasn't successful.

Jiminy Crickets are folks around here a little chippy...

We have another thread slamming someone for asking the government to pay for something of hers, yet we don't bat an eye at someone such as this gent that just sets off, doesn't plan for shit, and in the end costs one taxpaying body or another direct costs because of his personal little goal. Especially something as high risk as crossing a sea on a wind board...

Normally, it's ME that's the one who needs to go back to bed and wake up on the other damn side. Maybe some folks are pissed off because they know their Packers' team is just a player or two away from being in the Super Bowl and they "know" Ted Thompson is most surely going to sit on his hands and build within. I could see how that would get people chippy.
