Micheal Rodney of Packer Update is bringing the doom and gloom.

I do have the feeling that we will never see Collins in a Packer uniform again. It is not worth the risk. To me no Collins is on par with our pass rush problem. It will be interesting how Ted handles this as it was pretty obvious our current roster is not adequate when it comes to the Safety position. Not to mention that Collins was a leader on D. I have seen Mark Barron slip to the mid 20s in Mock Drafts. If he does last that long I wouldn't mind Ted making a trade up to get him. I don't see him getting past Denver. Dawkins is nearly done and has his own neck issues to deal with.

I kind of wish I didn't read the article. The author makes it sound like the five guys mentioned, Tim Lewis, Gary Berry, Sterling Sharpe, Terrence Murphy and Jeremy Thompson were all cleared to play and it was the Packers whom said no and ended their careers. That's false. If doctors cleared them, there is 31 other teams (27 prior to Murphy) that could have went with the player.

It is possible Nick Collins does not pass the physical for the Packers, but it's not as if the Packers are going to blindly say no as the article perceives.

I think honestly it comes down to the medical evaluation. The common thread between Thompson’s injury and Murphy’s injury (I’m not sure about the others) is the presence of spinal stenosis (the narrowing of the spinal column). That’s a big deal because, while you can live a healthy normal life with it, spinal stenosis increases the chance of serious debilitating spinal injuries.

Collins has no prior history of this, it’s only sometimes a side effect of cervical fusion (generally more pronounced in those already predisposed to it.) So there’s a chance that Collins escapes without developing spinal stenosis, in which case I see no reason that he can’t be cleared to play. That is, if the doctors can say, with a high degree of confidence, that Collins’ chance of serious neck injury has not increases, then you clear him.

If there’s any evidence of spinal stenosis at all, I agree that they don’t clear him. But to my eyes it’s akin to a coin flip. It’s based on some medical data we have no conceivable way to know, so I’m not inclined to speculate as to what will happen.

EDIT: Also, this article makes it sound like Packer Update has some type of inside information that the Packers won't clear Collins when in fact it's complete speculation based on previous circumstances which is admitted in the article are all significantly unique. Mr. Rodney provides some interesting insight on things often, but he's also wrong often. Just recently he was Tweeting that the Packers were going to use the franchise tag on Finley. In the next day or two, he signs a new contract. That's just one example, but the point is he speculates a lot and is often incorrect. That's important to keep in mind when reading his editorials.

I've been up front about this since the day he was carted off the field, I don't want to see Nick on a football field in pads ever again. I am not a selfish fan. He is not going to do anybody any good if he is paralyzed from his neck down. He goes down as one of GB's all time great safeties, he has a ring and financial security - he does not need to come back.

The team needs a versatile player capable of covering the slot and blitzing the QB. Janoris Jenkins is very similar to Woodson in that regard and he could fall because of his past.

Do you really think Wood has enough pop in him to play safety full time? I wouldn't mind bringing in a veeteran not named Charlie Peprah.

It might not be with the Packers but perhaps he will suit up somewhere again. It's appears Manning is attempting to do the same thing despite numerous difficulties. A player is always one play away from potentially being paralyzed, regardless of past events. If his medical staff truly thinks his risk is no greater than it was beforehand, he should play if he wants. People often make statements such as "it's just a game" etc., etc., but ultimately it's more than just a game for professional athletes. It's their career and often their life focus. Most of their lives up to this point have been focused on this "game," from working out, to training, working deals, publicity, etc. Individuals continue incredibly risky careers all the time, frequently after major accidents. It may not be the most logical thing to do, but neither is playing in the NFL period, this being a perfect example. I would be highly surprised if he returns to the NFL, but not shocked. The bigger question to me would be his effectiveness. Even if perfectly healed I'm just not sure he would ever be half the same player he was.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out for both Collins and Manning.
