I barely noticed most of the commercials, although the polar bears in the Coca-Cola ads were cute. In fact cuteness seemed to be a predominant theme this year, in contrast to the frenetic search for snidely clever humor that have characterized Super Bowl ads in the past. There were a lot of references to
Star Wars and
Ferris Bueller's Day Off. A number of the ads I recognized, since they have been running for some time already.
My German friend was fascinated with the halftime show. She'd never seen anything like it in a European sporting event, although I imagine that the gigantic concert that opens the World Cup might rival it.
Overall, I was pretty
meh about the whole event. The game was relatively boring except for the last half of the 4th quarter (and even then, the only drama was that I really didn't want the Patriots to win), the ads were unremarkable, and the bar was so loud I could barely hear the halftime show.
