Now that the 9-7 New York Giants have made it to the Super Bowl, I think it's high time to trot out this oldie-but-goodie from CHFF. Click on the link to read the entire article. There are some interesting tidbits in there about your very own Green Bay Packers that you might not have known before.

Moral hazard and the modern playoffs
Cold, Hard Football Facts for January 14, 2009

Cold, Hard Football Facts

If it seems odd that two nine-win teams will battle for the NFC title on Sunday, there's a good reason.

It is odd – as odd as the number on Donovan McNabb's or Kurt Warner's jersey (that would be 5 or 13, for those of you keeping score at home).

In fact, you have to go all the way back to the 1967 NFL championship game – better known as the Ice Bowl – to find a league or conference title game that pitted two nine-win teams. The 9-4-1 Packers hosted the 9-5 Cowboys at frosty Lambeau Field that famous day.

But at least those teams had an excuse: they played back in the 14-game era. Given two more games each, it's reasonable to expect that at least one of those teams, and probably both, would have won at least 10 games.

So, yes, the Eagles (9-6-1) and Cardinals (9-7) are a pair of rare birds. And no matter what happens on Sunday, the Super Bowl will feature a nine-win team for just the third time in history (the 1967 Packers and 1979 L.A. Rams are the others).

It's a nice a little story for those who enjoy football fairy tales about plucky little teams that threaten to win it all.

To the Cold, Hard Football Facts, it's a perversion of the natural order of things and the latest manifestation of a disturbing trend that has come to dominate, and diminish, the playoffs over the past four years. It's a trend that:
• Calls into question the wisdom of four-team divisions and the realignment of 2002.
• Calls into question the current playoff structure created by realignment.
• Diminishes the importance of the brutal 16-game regular season.
• Virtually destroys what used to be known as home-field "advantage" in the playoffs.
• Put most simply, the NFL needs to take steps to create better and more just playoff system. Simply look at the chaos realignment created here in the 2008 NFL postseason:
• A 12-4 team (Indy) had to go on the road to face an 8-8 team (San Diego).
• A 9-7 team (Arizona) hosts not one but two playoff games, both of them against teams with better regular-season records.
• An 11-5 team (New England), which beat 9-7 Arizona by 40 points just a few weeks ago, is forced to sit at home and watch it all unfold on TV, missing the playoffs even though its record equaled or bettered that of three of the four title-game contenders.
• An 8-8 team (San Diego) reached the playoffs while not one but four teams with better records across the two conferences did not (Dallas, Chicago, N.Y. Jets, New England).
• Quite frankly, the widely criticized BCS offers a better system than what the NFL has given us since 2002.

To put it most bluntly, the NFL acts as if it could hardly care less about the blood and shattered bodies scattered across pro football arenas for 17 weeks from September to December.

Article has some accuracy issues. First one that I noticed the Giants in '07 were not the 6th seed, they were 5th and I think the Redskins were the 6th.

Zero2Cool (10m) : Sounds like Texans got a kicker issue.
Mucky Tundra (39m) : Well the Chiefs couldn't capitalize so I spoke too soon
Mucky Tundra (43m) : And that's probably the game there
Mucky Tundra (49m) : missed FG+XP looming large with the Texans down 8 atm
Mucky Tundra (1h) : Fairbairn with a missed FG and XP for Houston already
Mucky Tundra (1h) : NFL posted the Orens hit as a highlight on Twitter; deleted now. Really sums things up.
Martha Careful (1h) : watching both the Kansas City and Houston pass rush makes me glad we fired our defensive line coach
Martha Careful (1h) : this was not our year… especially from New York
Zero2Cool (1h) : It's not like there was a plethora of games distracting New York from calling in the penalty
TheKanataThrilla (2h) : A little salt in the wound to fine Burks now
Zero2Cool (2h) : Bears interview Adam Stenavich for HC
Zero2Cool (2h) : Oren Burks fined $8,333 for unnecessary roughness on Nixon hit that caused fumble
Mucky Tundra (2h) : if it's gonna happen here, it'll be the Texans pass rush making Mahomes miserable
Mucky Tundra (2h) : There's usually a road upset win in the divisional round
Martha Careful (3h) : I don't see it happening but I would sure love to see Houston pull the upset here
Mucky Tundra (3h) : *rebuffed
Mucky Tundra (3h) : Bears coaching search in trouble? Bears reached out to the Steelers about trading for Mike Tomlin and rebuffes per Schefter
Mucky Tundra (4h) : This is one of the reasons I find the MNF wildcard games annoying
Martha Careful (4h) : Beast, your is a very strong point...for a change 😊😊😊
beast (4h) : More consistent with their time and rest between games.
beast (4h) : I think all the AFC games should be on Saturday and all the NFC should be on Sunday (maybe reverse the order every year), to more consistent
Martha Careful (5h) : Don't you think teams with the byes should play Sunday? It is fairer to opponents to give an additional day. instead of short week.
beast (17-Jan) : You have a point, it's a very wise move, therefore, that can't be what the Jets are doing.
Zero2Cool (17-Jan) : It'd be a wise move.
beast (17-Jan) : I think Jets are just killing time, and picking up information as they wait for their guy to get done with the playoffs.
Zero2Cool (16-Jan) : Brewers icon & Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Uecker passed away today at the age of 90
Zero2Cool (16-Jan) : Jets wanna interview Jeff Hafley for their HC spot. W. T. F.
beast (15-Jan) : A more aggressive QB, potentially could of hit the WRs more often, taking some risks, but also potential get an INT.
beast (15-Jan) : So Hurts didn't take many, if any risks, and wasn't throwing into Cover 2, which I think helped the Packers. Where a more aggressive QB o
beast (15-Jan) : Cover 2, keep a CB and Safety over top of both WRs... and Hurts (like Rodgers) is overly careful and doesn't like any risk in his throws.
joepacker (15-Jan) : new to this maybe question n wrong place?
joepacker (15-Jan) : how did the packers mostly shut down the eagles passin attack and specifically how did they manage such a good job on aj brown?
Zero2Cool (15-Jan) : Per his dad
Zero2Cool (15-Jan) : Watson to have his surgery soon, and should be back around Week 12, with a normal rehab.
beast (15-Jan) : More likely to listen if the guy controlling the ball is the one telling them
beast (15-Jan) : Apparently because players aren't doing the small things when the coaches tell them, and LaFleur believes they're more likely
Zero2Cool (15-Jan) : Jordan isn't a vocal guy. Why not let him lead his way?
Zero2Cool (15-Jan) : I'm not sure it ever bodes well when you have to tell your team leader to be more vocal.
Zero2Cool (15-Jan) : CFL. Nice.
packerfanoutwest (15-Jan) : good luck with that
packerfanoutwest (15-Jan) : Matt LaFleur looking for Jordan Love to be more of a vocal leader
civic (14-Jan) : I’m old enough to remember watching him play in the CFL
civic (14-Jan) : Clements is taking a lot of experience and knowledge out the door with him
Zero2Cool (14-Jan) : Longtime Packers QB coach Tom Clements is retiring, Matt LaFleur says.
Zero2Cool (14-Jan) : Didn't watch the game so can't say
Mucky Tundra (14-Jan) : Anyone else abhor MNF wildcard games?
Martha Careful (14-Jan) : Why is it that the Rams rookies can contribute right away but our first and second year guys are too young to contribute in a meaningful way
Martha Careful (14-Jan) : Yes, Saquon Barkley had a very nice game. But he has a much better offensive line in front of him. I'll take Josh Jacob's. I love the guy
buckeyepackfan (13-Jan) : Rumor has Mike going to The Bears.
Zero2Cool (13-Jan) : Mike McCarthy is out as Cowboys coach
